Well… this has gotten rather interesting. From all the comments I'm reading, it's clear that not everyone has read enough of my site to know what's going on here, so I think I need to tell the story from the beginning. For everyone's benefit.
Okay… here goes…
In 1990 I created Bob and Larry. Over the next few years, my wife, my mother, my friend Mike Nawrocki and two guys named Robert Ellis and Chris Olsen helped me produce the first episode of VeggieTales. Oh yeah… my friend Kurt helped with the music. And my friend Dina kept the books. That all started in 1990.
Ten years later we had sold more than 30 million videos, and had built the largest animation studio between the coasts. VeggieTales was a big hit, helping families around the world. But I messed up. I grew my company too fast and tried to do too much all at once. Then a former distributor took us to court, claiming we had breeched a verbal agreement. They won the case, and I lost everything in bankruptcy… Bob and Larry, the songs, the videos, everything. (The verdict was overturned two years later, but I didn't get anything back. It doesn't work that way.)
So I don't own or control VeggieTales anymore. Classic Media, a secular media company in New York City, bought VeggieTales out of bankruptcy and formed a new company to make more VeggieTales videos. (The new company is called Big Idea, Inc. My old company was Big Idea Productions, Inc. Big Idea, Inc. is still a Christian company, employing many of my old friends from Big Idea Productions like Mike Nawrocki and Kurt Heinecke. I mention that Classic Media is a secular company not because I think secular companies are 'evil' or can't be trusted, but simply because the first question fans usually ask after hearing of the sale is, "Was Big Idea bought by a Christian company?" I like the guys at Classic. They're good guys.) I don't work for the new company. I still do some voices and give them notes on scripts, but I don't control anything about VeggieTales anymore. This point is somewhat important.
Ever since buying VeggieTales, Classic Media has been looking for a way to get the shows on television, to increase awareness and, ultimately, sell more videos. (That is, after all, the business they're in.) Earlier this year, they found a way – by partnering with two other kids TV producers (Scholastic and Corus) and buying NBC's Saturday morning block. The three partners decided to create a "literacy and values" block of educational programming. Scholastic and Corus would provide the 'literacy' part, and Classic Media would provide the 'values' part, that being VeggieTales.
Mind you, it wasn't a 'literacy and religion' block, it was a 'literacy and values' block. I bumped into a Scholastic executive at a conference shortly after the deal was announced and asked him if Scholastic was comfortable with the Christian nature of VeggieTales. He said, "You're giving us too much credit." Which was another way of saying, I think, "We haven't actually watched them."
At this point I had had nothing to do with the deal, other than pointing out to friends at Big Idea, Inc. that not many kids were watching the major networks anymore, and that perhaps VeggieTales could be used more strategically to help redefine and reshape the somewhat anemic world of Christian television.
Regardless, the deal was signed, and Classic approached me and asked if I could help reshape the shows for NBC. At that point Classic thought they could supply a full one-hour VeggieTales show, with lots of room for fun new stuff. I asked a very important question: "What can we say?" I knew NBC didn't want a religious show, but rather a 'values' show, so my fear was they would want all Christian references removed from VeggieTales. I didn't have much interest in signing up for that cruise. But my friends at Classic and Big Idea said, "NBC says only the Bible verse needs to be removed," and I thought, "Wow – that's pretty amazing." So we could say "God made you special and he loves you very much." On NBC! How cool would that be?
I signed up for the cruise. My new little company, Jellyfish Labs, went to work on the project. We selected 13 classic veggie stories to use, and I decided we'd set the show at Bob's house and have all sorts of goofy new friends come over to visit. Then we found out we couldn't do a full hour show, but rather just a half-hour, so a lot of the new fun stuff got thrown out. Oh, well. It could still be fun.
Then on August 14th, just two weeks before the first three episodes had to be delivered to NBC, I was sitting at a meeting about the VeggieTales movie Big Idea is producing with Universal when the head of Big Idea leaned over to me and said, "NBC says we can't say 'God made you special and he loves you very much'."
I think I turned visibly white. "How are we supposed to end the show, then?" I asked. He didn't have an answer. (A strong Christian himself, he clearly wasn't any happier than I was about the news.) My next thought was, "It's time to get off this ship." But over the next day I decided to continue. Why? Partly as a favor to my friends at Big Idea and Classic Media. Partly as a favor to the old Big Idea Productions animators who were excitedly working on the new scenes at Bob's house, and who really needed the income. Partly because I had committed to helping Big Idea, Inc. with this project, and, even though the rules had now changed, I felt I needed to keep my committment. At least NBC was still okay with the stories themselves, which mentioned God frequently. That was still pretty cool.
Four days before the first three episodes were due to be delivered to NBC, we got an email from NBC's 'standards and practices' department with a list of lines that needed to be removed from one of those shows – every line that implied God or the Bible might have an impact on how we live our lives today.
It became perfectly clear: NBC didn't want a religious children's show. They wanted a 'values-based' children's show. At that time in history, the new Big Idea was referring to its products as "values-based" rather than "Christian" in order to reach a wider audience and avoid scaring away potential marketing partners uncomfortable with religious companies or products. So it appears NBC had signed up for the "values-based" VeggieTales product line, assuming any religious references could be easily excised. Apparently NBC, like Scholastic, hadn't taken the time to watch enough VeggieTales episodes to realize many of the stories hinged entirely on statements about God or the Bible. So the whole deal was done, it appears, on false premises.
At this point we told Big Idea they would need to do the story editing on their end. We had been hired to reformat the shows and create new hosting material, not recut the stories themselves. My friends and I at Jellyfish Labs focused down on finishing the new material (replacing, with heavy hearts, "God made you special" with "Thanks for coming to my house"), wanting to complete the project and move on as soon as possible. Frankly, it may be hard for Big Idea to come up with thirteen episodes that can meet NBC approval and still make sense. ("Dave and the Giant Pickle" is one in particular that absolutely falls to pieces without clear statements about God's character.)
So… for those of you new to my site: I do not own or control Big Idea, Inc. or VeggieTales. I did not make the deal with NBC. I did not decide to edit the shows. NBC did not pay me or Big Idea for the rights to VeggieTales. Classic Media and the other partners paid NBC. I do think the new stuff we came up with for Bob's house is a lot of fun. I hope you get to see it. I probably would not have done this project at all if the parameters had been clear from the beginning. I can't wait to move on to some new projects on the horizon that will help parents pass on their Christian faith to their kids in creative, new ways. I hope you get to see those, too.
I have a new kids book out called Sidney & Norman – A Tale of Two Pigs. It has God in it. I hope you get to read it sometime. I'm writing a book about the entire VeggieTales experience. It's called Me, Myself & Bob. It has lots of God in it.
I hope you have a clearer picture of the story of NBC and VeggieTales. It is not a tale I enjoy telling, and it would not make a very good children's book.
But now you know.
Wow, thanks for the details. I never knew this and you can thank the NYtimes for sending me here with a link. My kids were too old for your cartoons when they came out but I am expecting a grandchild soon and will look for the Sidney and Norman book. I am honestly very sorry for your loss. I know how much your work affected children in a positive way in the 90’s. Keep it up – fight the good fight. Kim
you want big idea back today phil vischer along with jeffrey montgomery wanting harvey entertainment back today and their libraries could be owned by you two animators. thank you.
Thank you, Mr. Vischer, for once again setting the record straight for those who don’t know the whole story.
For those of us who have read the whole story, we understand the agony you’re going through by even completing this agreement.
However, let the Word of God encourage you with this truth: the Lord has said in Psalm 15 that “he who walks with integrity, and works righteousness, and speaks truth in his heart, and does not slander with his tongue, nor does evil to his neighbor, nor takes up a reproach against his friend…who swears to his own hurt, and does not change (meaning you keep your word even when it’s hard and unpleasant, even when you’d rather back out)…this is the one that will never be shaken, and this is the one that will abide in the Lord’s tent and dwell on His holy hill.
You made a commitment, and you have decided to keep that commitment, no matter how hard it may get for you personally.
And the Lord will honor your decision.
I remember hearing you tell what happened on TBN why watching Veggie Tales clips, listening to you say all the hard work and sweat just to watch your hard work go into the hands of someone else. I think at that time you said you continued to write, draw and be a part of production but you never got your rights back, I know my memories may not capture it as what all was said at that time. But know it ripped my heart then even to this day it still hurts when I think about that episode of you explaining what happened on a TBN episode of Veggie Tales. I never stopped hurting for you and still feel your pain. Even though it was taken out of your hands you still brought so much joy and happiness to so many people from the young too the aged and eventhough I still watch Veggie Tales I will always know you were the original to your characters and no one can ever take that part of you away no matter whose hands VeggieTales is in, I will always know the real truth behind your characters, be blessed and thanks for blessing me with each episode that blessed me when I was going through something and searching for answers .
Hey Phil, I feel your pain for having to re-explain this a dozen times, though it shouldn’t come as a surprise. It’s extremely complicated and with all the publicity this is getting you probably have a flood of new folks to the blog.
Reminds me of a Seth Godin blog post of late:
You have to keep telling and re-telling your story. Again and again and again.
But please don’t give up. It’s great to get your honest inside perspective.
Good scripture, Cookie Lady.
I’ll bet it’s even more filling than a dozen warm fresh out of the oven homemade cookes. 8-{)>
Peace, Phil. Sounds like you’ve been getting a lot of negative e-mail. I hope there comes a way for folks to get the whole picture on this, so they can quit beating you up for other people’s decisions.
And I meant to add:
And it really shows a man of character to reply to all this in a positive way, rather than lashing out at those who attack you.
Remember, God made you special and He loves you very much.
Thanks for taking the time to set the record straight. Your candor and sincerity are refreshing.
I have always been impressed with the quality of the VeggieTales productions–something not always seen in Christian circles.
I am so glad you took the time to clear that up. I just very recently found out that you are the the owner of Veggie Tales anymore and I was wondering if maybe you were still Top Tomato. I really feel an emptiness since I found out all of this. I really hope that somehow Veggies does not become some secular monster. Thank you so much for all the years of fun and excitement. Veggie Tales has truly become a part of our family and has impacted us in many ways. I am looking forward to seeing your new books and any future work. Thank You!!!!!!
Thanks, Phil, for posting this and setting the record straight again (at least for a little while).
I admire your ability to answer this calmly, and without blowing your top. I suspect that some of the comments and emails you’ve gotten are even worse than the ones we’ve seen here, and I wasn’t totally able to keep my cool reading them.
Keep trying to do your best, and staying upbeat about this. I’ll be praying for you.
Hiya Phil,
I’m sorry you have to keep re-explaining – but such is the internet. Everyday there will be someone new who’ll Google you or the topic and then leave heartbroken questions, helpful and well meaning (and uninformed) comments, and, alas, those who’ll leave the “other kind” too. Encouraging, aren’t I?
You have probably already considered this, but I wonder if it would be helpful to put a semi-permanent, clearly visible “Did Bob and Larry Sell Out to NBC?” link on your home page, to direct all who click on it to the very concise post above, and maybe to the “magnum opus” from your old site?
(Maybe on the right margin under the calendar so it will appear no matter what page someone is directed to from a search engine…?)
Not that everyone who visits will read it, but at least there is a chance that the disappointment of some can be bathed in the cool water of the truth and the wrath of others can be tempered with understanding of the situation that you find yourself in.
I appreciate how patiently you handle the well meaning, and essentially ignore the “other kind” of visitors. So I second what Joel said about your character being evident. I am so proud of you, Phil.
I have five kids, so forgive the maternal tone – nothing can be done about it. Oh, and you are older than me, so figure that out 🙂
Thank youfor posting the information Phil. It frustrates me that NBC would do this. On the otherhand I wonder why Classic Media didn’t fight this. Veggie Tales is Christian based, it shouldn’t have to be changed. Maybe they should have gone with a different network, like CBS.
Take comfort in the fact that God knows your heart – what everyone else says won’t matter in the long run. Thanks for the continued candor and frequent updates!
Wow. My eyes have been opened. Keep up the good work and don’t compromise. I can’t believe NBC (who is not the federal government!) can be “such a weenie” as kids say. Well, my heart goes out to you.
You know, I still think God is going to use this NBC thing for His glory!! Instead of trying to “understand” why these show had to be edited for network TV, why don’t we pray that God’s message reaches these kids? We spend too much time trying to unruffle feathers of fellow Christians. It is what it is. God can touch the hearts of people in ways we can’t even comprehend. But we must pray. It seems to me the only people complaining, are us Christians. Pray that these kids will fall in love with the series, go out and buy an unedited DVD, and then hear the message: There is a God! He made them and loves them!!
Thank you, Phil. For being passionate, persistent, and pliable. Can’t wait to see where the current takes you next.
Dear Phil,
I’m so saddened by all the turns and twists of your Jobian experience. I am so sorry you had to go through that. Proverbs 3:5,6 comes to mind, “Trust in the Lord with your whole heart and mind, and do not trust in your own understanding, but in all your endeavors, (good or bad), acknowledge Him and He will guide your path.”
I have been a long time fan of the clean-cut Monty-Python sensibility of your wonderful veggie-tables since I was dating a single mom whose son loved “The Bunny Song” and I had to learn it on the guitar to make him happy. (Not to mention he also loved “The Hairbrush Song”, “The Waterbuffalo Song”, and “I Love My Lips”…you get the idea)
When I worked for the sheriff’s dept. I would have some tough days working in the jails and come home feeling I had been put through the ringer physically & spiritually. I would plop down on my couch and throw in a veggie-tale and soon I felt much better after laughing my self silly.
I pray God blesses you and uses this experience to allow you an even wider venue of ministry to the youth of this country. Keep up the good fight my brother.
Hi, Phil.
Here’s a rose for putting up with this cantankerous lot:
@}–;—
Thank you for explaining. It’s heartbreaking to see what NBC has done to your new work, but you’ve still left us a body of work that my family and I continue to enjoy; thank you for everything.
My kids are 12 and 10. I used to watch Veggie Tales with them. We had just about all of the stories on videotable (remember videotape?) and we watched them over and over. I wondered what happened to Veggie Tales and now I know. Thanks for telling the story, and thanks for not compromising on removing God from the stories. Your ideas are great, the concept is great, you are creative, with a desire to serve God. Now you have business savvy, learned from a painful experience, to get the business aspect right the next time. It all sounds like a great combination, and I am as sure as I can be that the Lord will bless you in your next endeavor beyond your wildest dreams. God bless you.
well said…
it appears I was right (several posts ago) when I wondered aloud weather classic media paid NBC to put bob and Larry on television and that they only gain exposure in the deal, I don’t exactly recall but I believe that was during the sell out discussions, my point being it is difficult to “sell out” when you aren’t getting paid,
aside from all the headache for you, my kids and I really like seeing Veggie tales on Saturday mornings even with the changes, although I have to admit “thanks for coming over to my house” just doesn’t have the same kind of ring to it
I agree with Lisa S. And it will be so hard not to fall in love with the characters that I think a lot of kids will get to see the uneditied DVDs.
But this line just makes me sad: ‘NBC says we can’t say ‘God made you special and he loves you very much’.”
Is that really offensive?
I’m so very sorry to hear about your loss in this whole venture. It’s a very sad day when networks are afraid to air what has been proven to be a very popular show in its entirety based on the fact that God is present in them. My family and I have only recently (within the past year or so) become acquainted with Veggie Tales and are HUGE fans. It’s so refreshing to have a program out there that the entire family can enjoy together, that actually has a solid base in faith. I’m deeply saddened to hear that NBC can’t find the value in what is already a perfect show and trust it’s history of viewership. I do hope that a deal is struck with a network who will realize the full benefits of keeping this show as you intended it. Thank you SO much for creating it and for letting us know the whole story.
Phil, I still say that this is great. Light always overpowers darkness, and the traditional values on this show will oppose the rebellion, cynicism, and witchcraft being pushed by other “children’s shows.” Further, if I recall from your old website, your desire was to be Walt Disney, to create an alternative to Nickelodeon (owned by MTV) and such. Well, this is how your dream is coming true … getting good values and role models out to the masses! And yes, kids will see this on NBC, go to secular retail outlets, see the VeggieTales videos, and buy them. This includes not only unchurched kids, but kids who believe in God but are not regular church attenders (because their parents aren’t), and even kids who are regular church attenders but generally do not seek out alternative Christian programming. Look at it this way. MTV2 has now started playing Christian videos every now and then; BET has long played Kirk Franklin videos and carried Bishop T. D. Jakes’ show. So, MTV and BET are still very much secular, right? Just the same way, despite all of the edits that NBC tries to make on VeggieTales, it will still be a Christian brand, a Christian enterprise, and the power of the Holy Spirit will still be there to cause a transforming change in the hearts of whoever child is open to it. Imagine a kid seeing VeggieTales on NBC, picks up “An Easter Carol” from a secular retailer around Easter time, and learns about and gives his life to God through Jesus Christ! It can happen … in the Name of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ I am “naming and claiming” that it WILL happen! And yes, the “conservative” groups protesting is generating controversy, which will bring even more publicity and viewers. This whole deal, despite all of Satan’s attempts to oppose it, shall work the Will of God. But in the Name of Jesus Christ, Satan is already defeated, and God and all who believe in and serve Him in spirit and truth have the victory through His Word! Hallelujiah!

My family and I are filled with admiration for your work, which has literally been a “blessing” to us. Plus, it’s funny.
With you all the way, Dr. Phil. 🙂 With you all the way.
I’m glad you put this up, Phil. There were so many people that were obviously a little mixed-up. And it opened MY eyes a little, too.
Wow! I just found out about Jellyfish and Veggie Tales.
Thanks for the details on what happened but more importantly thanks for your ministry through Bob and Larry. You don’t know how much of an impact those two veggies had on my kids. I am blessed everytime I hear them sing, “There is nothing left to fear,…He died for us to give us life and to give us hope He rose!”
You brought Jesus to their level. May God bless your new pursuits.
Hey Phil.
It must have been incredible to build Big Idea Productions, Inc. and be so famous! I am very thankful that you created Veggietales, 3-2-1 Penguins!, and the Larry-Boy Cartoon Adventures and that you were succesful for so many years! God can really work through you! I am really, really sorry for what happened to the company. I remember when I saw Little Joe, I noticed something was different about it. I can’t recall now what it was, but I found philvischer.com and read about everything. I had no idea all that had happened! I was shocked at all that you had to do to keep the company going during the making of Jonah, but it still crashed, and I can’t even fathom what it felt like! I think it’s incredible that you built Big Idea and that you are still active in the Veggietales videos. I got really excited when I found out about the “Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” because I remember when Jonah came out on DVD, I watched all the special features and saw the beginnings of the “Bob and Larry Movie.” I was disappointed when I found out that it wasn’t coming out, so I’m really looking forward to seeing the Pirates.
I read the Big Idea story back in 2004, I believe, and I have COMPLETELY forgotten that Classic Media owned Veggietales and that you no longer owned Big Idea. I appologize for ‘blogging without thinking.’ I have gone onto bigidea.com and looked at job oportunities because I wanted to be the voice of a veggie, but figured out that it wasn’t likely to happen. Anyway, I’m very happy to know that you didn’t sign with NBC and didn’t want the cuts. I will keep you in my prayers and, again, I look forward to seeing the Pirates movie and the upcoming Veggietales videos. God Bless!
I echo everyone else who thanks you for your effort to keep the record straight. It can’t be easy. Just remember that God’s word does not return void. Even though NBC thinks they are editting out God and the scripture, God is much smarter than they will ever be. He can still use Veggie Tales. Just as Lewis was able to use Aslan to sneak the gosple into the minds of the unsuspecting, God can use Veggie tales. I admit to not seeing the NBC versions yet, as our satelite provider still does not have local affiliates, but eventually these kids will be in Wal-Mart and will see a Veggie video, and then they can get the real truth. Thanks Phil. I can’t wait for your ‘big boy book’ (can’t really call it an ‘adult book’; too many weird conotations. Your story has been an inspiration to me.
And oh yeah; MORE PUPPETS! I am going through Buck Denver withdrawls. I can’t believe Buck has not had a tribute to the Croc Hunter! I think he is the only one.
I also, just found out that Phil was no longer the head of Big Idea. I started wondering when I saw that the Veggies were coming out with a new CD – Singing the 70’s. While I will wait until it comes out to see what is on it, I am having a hard time imagining traditional 70’s music being godly.
That said, my boys love Veggies, and so do my husband and I. I direct my church’s youth choir and would love to have them sing “One Lord.” They all love the song and so do I. Plus it has a great message. Is this a possibility? If so, how do I go about it?
I think Copernicus might have had similar rejections but Hey! The earth does revolve around the Son! God bless you Brother.
Thank you, Phil, for having the patience to explain over again. It brings tears to my eyes just imagining how you must feel. Veggie Tales is a big part of my son’s life. I even had a Veggie Tales themed party for his 1st birthday. I thank you for your courage to start Veggie Tales. God knows your heart and you have blessed so many.
Wow! what a story! As fresh parents, we are newcomers to the whole veggie tale scene, and are filled with compassion, admiration and gratefulness for all that God has done through you. Our 17 month old daughter can sing the whole veg-tale theme song – and the values there-in help us walk the sometimes impossible daily walk of training our little ones into the ways of God. So – God Bless you and Thank you from your brother and sister in the faith, in Haifa, Israel.
Brother, I HAVE followed this story not just from the beginning of the end, but from the beginning.
Allow me to say that the work you did originally – coveying God’s Word clearly to small children – is STILL EFFECTIVE and affecting many lives today. My 3 sons are evidence of that.
I pray that God comforts you as you watch something you built move new directions that you don’t entirely support. I pray that God has passioned your heart with your new projects even beyond what you had for Bob and Larry.
I have a vision. We need to buy it back. We have an enemy in this world. But the enemy is not greater than our Lord and Savior. We need to save the Veggies. Our enemy is trying to silence a powerful witness by corrupting it and turning Veggie Tales into Dora the Explora. We need to buy back the company and properties. I am a simple psychologist and do not know how to do this, but I know it must be done. How do we accomplish this task for the kingdom and the children of the King?
Phil, My prayer is that God will give you a New Idea and it will blow away anything you have done in the past. I believe you have learned a great lesson and won’t make the same mistake again. I pray that as you seek God ,He will bless you beyond what you can ask , hope or even think.
Stay Strong !
We are praying for you.
Your Sister In Christ,
Tina
Dr. Phil ~
Very glad I found this site! My husband and I loved VT’s long before we had kids. Your team’s creative talent is enormous and we appreciate all the work you have done for years and years! It’s interesting how we can also relate with your stance on ministry vs. business…an issue that has hit home to us far too recently!
All that to say: thanks for having the guts to be open and honest and for letting your fans know what happened. It sounds like you’ve made the most God-honoring decision…!
(In fact, I had just seen one of your kids’ books advertised somewhere and thought to myself, “hmmm…that’s what he’s been wanting to do all along! Tell stories.”)
God bless you and Lisa in everyway as you continue to put Him first. 🙂
Many regards,
Gina (& Paul)
I am a person who grew up watching NBC cartoons religiously (and I do mean religiously), and am still aware of what is currently shown on cartoons, they are NOT religiously diverse, universal, or neutral. Most of them 100% promote New Age, transcendental meditation, Hinduism, Buddhism, shamanism, Native American, and eastern religions. The very popular anime cartoons even mention the gods that are worshipped, show the worship rituals, etc.; an extremely popular kids show (that I will not name) merges ancient Egyptian and Japanese religions, and they conjure up the “gods” in those religions in every episode. Further, “Postcards From Buster” (publicly funded by the Department of Education!) had an entire episode proselytizing yoga! Look, NBC has the right to show what they want for the reason that they want, but we should not let them get away with the lie that their cartoons do not promote a particular religion or religious worldview. This is not to say that the executives of NBC are a bunch of eastern religion worshippers. Rather, they only select from these shows what is useful to their actual views, which is secular humanism. They promote alternative religious not so much because they believe in them, but rather because of their desire to undermine the dominant one. They recognize that most people are still going to want “spirituality” in their lives, so they show them a mishmash of “spiritual looking” stuff that basically tells kids to worship themselves. “God made you special and loves you very much” does not fit that agenda.
I wanted to cry when I read your message! I didn’t know and was very disappointed (even angry, I admit it) in the decision to cut God out of Veggie Tales. My friend referred me to this website and now my prayers are certainly with you.
We have noticed that even the videos don’t have the same “oomph” that they used to have. They’re not bad, just, well…not the same. In my opinion, you’re the Christian version of Jim Henson. The Muppets just weren’t the same after he died. I’m not exactly complaining, but I hope you do realize that YOU are the force behind Veggie Tales that made it so popular. The talents of your original crew were unbounded – God had blessed you, and I pray He will bless you again.
Two final questions: isn’t there any way you could regain control of the company? Can’t we, as consumers, do anything about it?
My prayers are with you! This has been the most educational and entertaining Saturday morning programming I’ve ever seen.
LOVE the Monty Pythonesque silliness with Archibald’s Oddities!
I’m a bit confused about NBC’s objections. My PVR recorded your shows at an irregular time because of sports. Minnesota Cuke was EXCELLENT. (I’d lost touch as my kids got older) It had overt Bible and God references. Not only THAT, it showed how God’s word should influence your behavior.
If they aired THAT, what’s the problem with “God made you special and He loves you very much?”
A friend once told me, “Never explain yourself–your friends don’t need it and your enemies won’t believe you.” Now, I have never believed the first part–your friends might not need an explanation but it’s nice to get one. I know I have been blessed by your long posts on what happened with Big Idea Productions and the lessons you learned. (BTW,I love the idea behind the name of your new company.)
Having said that, I have found that the second part of that little saying, the part about your enemies not believing you, is true. In my experience, people believe what they want to believe regardless of evidence, facts, or truth. And no matter how many times you explain things they will just stick to their preconceived, predetermined ideas. They have their worldview and anything that challenges that view is simply disregarded. And no one group has a monopoly on this. I have seen this attitude in both Christians, non-Christians, liberals, conservatives, etc.
For this reason, I have come to believe that there are really only two types of people–seekers of The Truth and everybody else. True Seekers seek, not only the ultimate truth about God and the Universe, but they are interested in the truth about the world and the people around them. Everyone else just believes what is convenient. If they want to see the world in the simple way Job’s “friends” saw it, that good things happen to good people and bad things happen to bad people, then they will see you as a bad person because it would destroy their worldview to think that God would allow a good man to lose his buisness and control over everything he has worked on. And there is nothing you can say to convince them otherwise.
I had to stop reading all the comments on your blog about the edits NBC demanded. It was just making me angry. (I don’t know what was more disturbing: the Christians blasting you for “selling out” or the self-proclaimed pagans cheering that the God stuff had been taken out.) I am so sorry that all this has happened to you, your family, and your cohorts. I too wish there was a way of turning back time and fixing it so that this never happened or wishing I had an extra few billion dollars lying around. But we must accept that God knows what He is doing.
I know the words of a stranger aren’t a whole lot of comfort, but I do want you to know that my family is praying for you and I hope this wound heals soon.
What a sad story!
but don’t be discouraged
God is not done with you yet
Isa 50:4
So Qubo buys the time from NBC and then sells it to the advertisers? Is that roughly the way the financing works?
At least there will be values-based cartoons on t.v.- which present natural law of good and evil. That’s better than some of the awful, pointless cartoons. And maybe this will introduce folks to VeggieTales and they will go get the Christian versions. Also- why can’t you say “you were made special and are loved very much” or “you are very special and loved very much”? Thanks for sharing your story- we LOVE VeggieTales and I’ve learned as much as my kids from them.
Im so sorry Phil, I had no idea what was going on behind the scenes, I’ve followed Veggie Tales since 93 and my six year old loves all the videos, and the penguin guys too. Once again Chrisitians get dumped on for being Christians, b/c if we teach children good Christian morales this world might become a better place. Thanks for sharing what happened. You are in our prayers.
Phil,
My children have been fans of VeggieTales for many years. We’ve known about all the legal problems but not to the depth described in this posts. Thanks for filling us in.
As it stands, God can still use the shows for good. It may seem impossible from our point of view, but turning the impossible into reality is God’s speciality.
Keep up the wonderful work you are doing! Veggie Tales are wonderful and I know that whatever you produce next will be a great testament to Christian values and beliefs that are so very needed in the world today! My children adore Bob, Larry, and all the rest! I hope that NBC ends up bringing more families to the world of Veggies by showing this program. God can take this situation and turn it into more good than we can imagine!
Phil:
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all the work you have done to bring the truth of the Gospel to children. My kids are better off as a result.
I am sorry that you have had to see all this happen to your art. I can’t imagine what this has felt like for you.
To those who would fault Phil, Mike, BIg Idea, or whoever for selling out… please stop to consider the example of Christ before casting stones.
Thanks so much for the explanation.Veggie Tales is an awesome program. My children watch it at church and love it.
Putting it on NBC was a great idea before they decided to change your entire show. Satan is hard at work trying to undo all the positive you’ve brought to this world. Our world is desperately trying to leave God out of everything! Little does the world realize that God is in full control and Satan’s time is short here.
Thank you for creating Veggie Tales and for your efforts in bringing it to secular tv. Although I do not watch NBC, I appreciate your commitment and understand why you kept your word. Jesus always keeps His, and our goal is to be like Him.
In Christ Alone,
Jill Sullivan
Phil (and everyone else here),
Take heart knowing you are doing the right thing. The American thing to do when faced with an agreement that is totally different than what you expected is to sue the other party and gum up the whole works. One biblical option — and I believe the one that is the closest to our Father’s nature — is to treat contracts as covenants. That is, you fulfill your side even if the other people don’t fulfill theirs. That’s what you’re doing here, and that’s what will bring the greatest glory to God.
I also appreciate how the careful light you’ve cast on this whole situation. Surely, NBC could be considered “at fault” for not watching enough of VeggieTales before agreeing to air it. And Classic Media could be considered “at fault” for selling it as a “values” show instead of a “Christian values” show. But instead of dwelling on these faults, you have highlighted the fact that every party involved approached this project with honest intentions that are good for kids even if they are watered down from a spiritual perspective.
Phil, you could have stood firm with a sword in your hand and scuttled the whole thing. It may have even been righteous to do so. However, it is also righteous to demonstrate grace and understanding for non-believers. Too often, evangelicals engaged in culture wars win the battle and lose the war. The war is not against people, but against the principalities and powers that hold people’s hearts.
Thank you, Phil, for demonstrating the way of Christ in your dealings. And if any misguided culture warriors start shooting arrows at you, just pick up your shield and laugh them off.
For His Glory,
Jim
“I think I turned visibly white,” Vischer said on his site. “‘How are we supposed to end the show, then?’ I asked. He didn’t have an answer.”
That hurts almost personally to think what you went through and had to remain Christ like in order to still try to bring God’s message to a people who do not want to hear from God.
Do your best and God bless you in whatever you may get through. This world is a very painful place to live sometimes when you can’t even bring something this simple to kids. Go forward for Jesus. Thank you for all you are able to do in His name.
Kevin F
Phil,
You state that you almost went away from the project. Why would you do the actuall editing, I can’t imagine why anyone with values such as the ones you portray on DVD would do such a thing.
I will re read your letter, but I did not see where you told them no and stood up for God in this whole thing….
I did re read and I see where you told them to do the editing their self. Are you doing any editing at this point?
I’m so sorry this has all happened. We were/are such fans of your creation. Shame on NBC and everyone else who feels the need to take GOD out of everything.
God bless you as you continue with your current work.
Jennifer
Remember, kids… God made Network Executives special, and He loves them very much.
NBC does not exist to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I don’t know their mission statement… but I would guess it says something like “make lots of money by selling ads on TV shows”.
Why do we expect them to promote Christian values?
Wow. I have read most everything on this website, but you reiterated the fact that you had nothing to do with the edits. I cried when I read how the Jellyfish team felt heavy-hearted about changing the “God made you special and He loves you very much” and I understand how you would like to move on. I love “Sidney and Norman”; I’m a Norman, and need to be reminded (often) that God doesn’t love me more because of how good a person I am. The illustrations are awesome, too. I love the one of Sidney going into God’s office.
Love in Christ and many blessings,
Jozy
I am very sorry that you have to go through this. I know that God’s plan is perfect and although it is not clear sometimes why things are aloud to happen good will come from this. You have helped so many with these cartoon’s including myself (I am 30), a new Christian and one of my first exposures to the word were from the Veggie Tales over at a friends house. Her children were watching it and I was fascinated with them never hearing the word and a babe myself although an “adult”. Keep fighting for Christ and know that you are doing very good for all ages.
A sister in Christ,
Kim
Stay loose, Phil. You navigate tough waters. You might be holding the doors open for someone down the line who, because you were willing to soldier through, might take the ball just a little further.
How many cliches did I just use there? 😉
Just thought you’d like to know that this situation made the vent over at HotAir.com –
My wife and I are torn about VeggieTales on NBC. Both of our kids love the VeggieTales but we’re not sure we want to support NBC stripping the soul out of it.
It is unfortunate that you and the other shareholders of Big Idea Productions did not have time to look for Christian investors who believe in your mission to invest in your former company before it went bankrupt. Because Classic is a secular company, there will be a price they will accept to buy the Veggie Tales franchise back.
There are many wealthy Christain individuals in this country looking for a place to put their money and make a difference.
(Mel?, etc.)
I hope you seek them and share your unique vision.
Phil and Lisa,
I HAVE to take this opportunity to say a long overdue thank you for creating VT. I have raised three sons on the wonderful entertainment, values and biblical teaching VT presents. We are proud owners of every VHS you ever put out. Some of them are worn and the boxes are very beat up, but I hope to pass them on to future grandchildren. Bless you!
I do not keep up with the media and its version of “news” anymore. I do however keep up with kid shows since I have three. I was actually quite surprised to find out Veggie Tales was showing on regular t.v. I was saddened (and honestly-judegmental) when I heard God was going to be taken out of the shows. After reading your blog I feel two things. 1. ashamed for judging without even knowing the WHOLE truth and 2. hopeful that as Lisa S. said God will still use this for His glory. He has an amazing way of doing that. (Just look at the Cross).
In any case I believe you will be blessed because of your heart for God. As He has said “man looks at the outward appearance but I look at the heart.” And I believe He is saying of you what He said of David-that your a man after His own heart.
All I wish to say is that I`m with you 100%, Phil. So many people fill their mouths talking about what`s going on and they don`t even know the real story. I have read the story of Big Idea and Jellyfish Labs. You are an inspiration to so many people, including me. You help me to see that God can use my gift, because He has given me those gifts. I want to impact the media just like you have done. Keep on runing the race, for you are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses that support you. God will make sure that somehow the new ViggieTales episodes impact kids for Him. I`ll be praying.
Phil,
You’ve already made miracles happen with Bob and the gang. I’m thinking in particular of a little girl who saw her first episode of Veggie Tales shortly after being hospitalized with the illness that would ultimately take her young life. That episode was also your first “Where’s God When I’m S-scared?” She was immediately hooked, and “Dave and the Giant Pickle”,” Rack, Shank & Benny” soon followed along with the others we could find.
Veggie Tales brought loads of laughter into her horrible situation, but more importantly it brought God to her in a way that was perfectly accessible, and as it turns out God was exactly what she needed.
Alannah was 4, and she was my daughter. I’m convinced that He sent you.
Eternal thanks, Phil. May you land on your feet and keep doing what you do.
Phil,
Lessons have been learned, experience gathered, and wisdom in hindsight is 20/20.
Veggie Tales, in the beginning, I believe was an inspired God idea. God is our creator and can inspire our creative minds to make things to serve him, through the Holy Spirit. In tha buisness realm: When the cares of this world and the decietfulness of riches, choke the WORD in us and make us unfruitfull. You take GOD out of the message of the cartoon, It will be unfruitfull.
If you still have any creative control over decisions in this cartoon. Prayer and fasting might be a good idea, and ask the lord what to do. He could give you a neat way of beating the “world” at their tricks.” If you don’t have any control, ask the Lord to give you more creative ideas that Honor and Glorify his name, and will be prosperous for you (that will take back what the devil stole from you.)
Please be encouraged,
Paige
I believe I have already commented on this thread but i needed a place to express myself
Johnny doughnut seed made me wet my pants! and yes, i am a grown up
today was the first time i had seen the new veggie tales open, that was also hilarious
Phil,
I sincerely apologize for blaming you. I stuck my foot in my mouth in ignorance when I should have offered support. I am sorry.
Thank you for setting the story straight even though you do not “owe” that to us. And in my case, thank you for being the better man.
When my wife & I have children in the near future, we will definitely look for your work to help us teach and entertain them.
I hope you’ll forgive my ingorance, and I’ll help spread the word.
Hehe
Phil,
Know that we are standing with you. Even though it doesn’t look like it at the moment, God is in this thing. We will continue to pray for this nation and for Godly people like you. Just remember the last chapter of THE book tells us the end……………………..WE WIN!!!!
With Love In Christ
Rachel, Alisha and Keith
I morn Bob and Larry and Junior and the Peas. I loved them and there sweetness. The inocence that has been lost to our children.
I read your story with a deep sadness. We have lost much. But, Jesus is comming soon and I just don’t know how we can keep teaching our children about His love without the help of things like vedgy tales. My oldest grandson went to college with Bob and Larry sitting proudly in the back window of his pick-up. Now my precious little Hanna 6 mo. old and her little cousin who isnt here yet will only grow up on old vidios that I proudly keep for them all.
I have 17 grandchildren between 24 and unborn. 2 great grands and I’m sure many more to come I hate to think of them growing up with out morals in a world where people walk in and shoot up an Amish school, inocent little girls. Maranatha!
Phil,
I don’t know what to say! I had not heard that you had lost the
rights to Veggietales. Late though it may be, I so sorry. I must say that I am so disappointed in Classic Media’s decision to “SELL-OUT”. Having the acknowledgement of God and His love and kindness towards us is the beauty of Bob and Larry! To take the
reminder that God loves us and He is THE source of our moral lives makes this witness JUST A SHOW! It is a shame that the powers that be at Classic Media are so willing to sell their faith
for a bag of silver. Let us not forget that we were bought with a
price that surpasses money. It was the shedding of our SAVIORS BLOOD!
Phil,
I’m not shocked about the whole thing. It seems to me when ever their is something that pertains to acknowledging our Lord and Saviour “JESUS CHRIST” and giving him his just do. There are going to be people influenced by satan to try to destroy the plan of God. But remember God has the final say for everything that pertains to Life and Godliness. This is the time we seek the masters face and revert to our manual “Bible” to let the Holy Spirit guide us into all truth. My daughter loves the Veggie Tales. Do we know that it gets the kids started on their Christian Walk. There is really almost nothing on tv or video that they can watch. We are in dire need of Godly principals in our homes. My question is “What About the Children”
I’m saddened but not surprised that the kind folks at ” No Biblical Cartoons” network would not allow mention of God…however, if you were to use Allah or Buddah, they’d probably be fine with it! Yes, I’m a little bitter about the main stream media and their obvious distaste for Christians and Christian values, but I know that the Lord can take this situation and use it for His Glory–Romans 8:28!! And while children might get a censored version on NBC, the cartoons are entertaining enough that they’ll be begging their parents for more Veggie Tales videos, which will take them (and their parents!) into a Christian book store (hopefully!) or at least get the videos in their homes regardless of where purchased, and they’ll be able to hear the whole message!! I pray their little hearts and ears and eyes can take it all in and they can come to know and love God….and that their parents can experience this also! God bless you!!
Dear Phil,
Sad but not surprised by “No Biblical Cartoons” network editing requirements, but God is not done with this! Romans 8:28!!
The cartoons are so good that kids will be clamoring for the videos…and once they see those…praise God, they’ll get to hear the wonder full message that God made them special and He loves them very much!!
God bless you!!
Thank you Mr. Vischer for all that you gave to the kids of today and all that you are continuing to give. I am twenty years old and I am not ashamed to say that I personally own Veggie Tales CDs and movies. I’m glad that I started this collection because someday I will be passing those lessons of GOD on to my children the way I am currently doing for my five-year-old brother. Larry and Bob have been his main basis of religious knowledge in this age of Godlessness and I thank you for bringing them into our lives and our homes. Though NBC will be taking God out of the Veggie Tales television show on Saturday mornings, they cannot take away what you have already given us. Thank you and God bless you.
I just listened to Phil tell this story on the Rick and Bubba Radio Show, and it clears alot up.
Phil, you should post the transcript from that!
Dear Phil,
I heard you this morning on Rick & Bubba, and that was the first time I had heard about all of this. I am so sorry for everything you have lost. My family has loved Veggie Tales for years, and the 3-2-1 Penguins! as well. We probably own all or close to all of them. My husband and I have been known to watch them even if the kids aren’t in the room. I love, love, love Lord of the Beans. For awhile “cookieman says No!” was the catch phrase around the house. There is so much more I could say, and so many good Veggie Tales memories, but I guess in a nutshell: Thank you, I am praying for you, and I am looking forward to seeing how God will continue to use you in a mighty way.
I will go and buy your new Sidney & Norman book this weekend, for us and for our church library. Your humor just owns me.
Phil,
Been there, lost that – even the T-shirt… Trials are never fun at the time.
Seems like Classic is trying a ‘seeker friendly’ approach in getting more brand exposure, but the bigger question is will the secular VeggieTales draw the audience to the videos or will the demand for & revenue from more secular VeggieTales dilute the focus from Christ. Like being yoked to an unbeliever, it’s rare that the unbeliever changes, and far more likely that the believer drifts away. We pray that Mike & Kurt and the rest will keep VeggieTales tracking with Christ!
God Bless and thanks for your ministry – all my kids have loved VeggieTales and I’m sure will always remember them fondly (us parents too!)
When my 14-year-old daughter read this, she cried. Wow. I hope Veggie Tales don’t change – they are just right as they are and don’t need any tampering. The whole thing is horribly unfair.
I loved sharing Veggie Tales with my daughter. As a Jewish family, I used to take a lot of flak from friends from all denominations about how I could be so pleased with Veggie Tales. As I replied, good values are good values. I picked and chose sotries from the Old Testament. They are the very same stories she hears in Sunday school. Thanks for your work over the years, and I’m sorry NBC is too much of a coward to allow it to air.
Dear Mr. Phil,
First off, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your ministry and your heart for children of all ages. Two years ago I accepted Christ as my savior, and through my pastor’s daughter I discovered VeggieTales! It was so refreshing to have those videos in a world where Christian values in the media are a rarity indeed. I learned a lot about the Bible and Christian values through VeggieTales. I’m happy to say I now, at 18 years of age, own all the videos, and I share them with my friends and family (They’re great when the Children’s Church teacher is out sick, too!). Everytime I’d watch them with my neice and nephew, my neice would crack up when Bob was on-he’s her favorite! 🙂
I’m currently a freshman in Bible college myself, and my major is Children’s Ministry. Your works have been an inspiration to me. I’ve been fascinated with animation for almost my whole life, and maybe someday I can be as versatile a voice actor as you are on a kid’s Christian show (How do you come up with all those voices? It’s amazing!). I hope that someday I can possibly reach as many children as you and your old team have. I’m so sorry about what happened to you and your company, but remember, everything is in God’s will, and He will always be there for us!
And though life has it’s ups and downs, always remember: God made you special and He loves you very much! God bless you and your family!
p.s. I read Sidney & Norman at the bookstore yesterday, and I loved it! I can be a Norman at times, but I use to be a big Sidney — i’ve been there and back. It really hit home with me. I really enjoyed it. 🙂 Can’t wait for “Me, Myself, and Bob”!
Wow, this has been enlightening. I feel for you, your friends and coworkers that the characters that you have created and invested so much energy, enthusiasm and effort in have been taken from you.
Take the company, but don’t take the rights to the Veggies. Man, that is harsh. And to call the new company Big Idea Inc.? That seems intentionally misleading.
It seems a shame that the 1st amendment is always used to enable free (raucous) speech, but not something that can actually make someone feel good and perhaps, do good. Not many reality shows can make that claim. Plus they are funny for people of every age.
I have always thought that all of you were putting the talents God gave you to good use. You have wit, talent and great voices and used them well.
We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. Hang in there!
You know, it’s great to be able to use the Lord’s name on the air. But I’d like to suggest that Veggie Tales can still give the Lord glory without the overt Scriptural references or mentioning Him by name.
Just look at the life and ministry of the Fred Rogers (of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood).
I was wrong! May God bless you and your family.
Thank you!
I just lately heard allthe hubbub about the Saturday morning cartoon and about taking God out. I don’t have public TV so I wouldn’t watch it anyway. However My first comment was along the lines of “I can’t believe their doing this”, and through my mind the word sellout went by like tickertape. I went home and googled veggietales and found this site. I guess I knew nothing about anything about the history of veggie tales. I also want to tell you and the rest of the original gang I am sorry. I apologize for lacking the grace that we proclaim we have. I hope you will forgive me and I promise to bring up the facts and this web site whenever I hear this subject again. And by the way, THANK YOU for all you’ve done for my kids.
In Him Owen Simiele
First, a big Texas-sized THANK YOU, Phil, for VeggieTales. My whole family loves them. Second, thanks for your transparency in sharing the “untold story” of BI’s nosedive. Although in a much smaller way, the Lord let a personal dream of mine crash and explode a little over a year ago. Same situation–pursuing MY vision vs. pursuing His. Third, in our area, the local NBC station bumps VT to Sunday, so it’s on while we’re at church. Thus, I can’t really comment on the “look what they’ve done to my show, Ma” debate. Finally, my initial reaction was rather snarky: “Qubo’s for everyone?” Apparently not for those wanting to hear “a message from the Lord.” However, having seen 3-2-1 Penguins and LarryBoy, there’s still Scripture quoted, and the moral lessons shine through crystal clear. All in all, it seems like God’s made the best of a bad situation. May He bless your future creative endeavors for the Kingdom.
VeggieTales got some media exposure on Glenn Beck’s nationally syndicated talk show today!!
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all that favorable. But it was in a funny way.
Glenn was complaining about his kid’s insatiable appitite for kids’ music in the car and how it drives him nuts.
Phil! More posts! We want to know MORE!
Hey found this new article on Phil at http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061007/NEWS10/61007072/-1/NEWS
and according to this page:: http://www.lifetoday.org/site/PageServer?pagename=tel_USCalendar_Oct06
Phil will be on LIFE Today Monday, October 30th and they will have a video file online to watch! Neato!
Phil, thank you for all you have done, all you are doing, and all you are going to do! Its amazing! And Buck Denver has been online for 1 year! woo hoo!
Keep up the great work Phil!
I’m 55 years old and love watching the Veggie Tales with my grandchildren. I wish we would of had these for our 4 children when they were growing up. Keep up the Good Fight.
I worked in a pre-school (Christian based, but not all the families were Christians) Veggie Tales were by far the most popular video for us to see on video day. I have to say that I heard VT references incessantly from my kids on the playground, to teachers, students, parents, and anyone else who would listen. For all of the hundreds of children that came through my classroom over the years, the seeds have been planted in a way that any four year old can understand. VT is an amazing creation, and to God be the Glory. I pray often that those seeds that He planted in the minds of those children will blossom, and send them seeking His will.
Dear Phil and all Veggie family,
Today my family and I were driving home and heard your interview with Scott Wilder on 100.7 in DFW. We new that there had been a law suit but saddly had no idea what was going on. I just want to say how much Veggie Tales have touched my family’s life. We have five kids ages 19yrs-16 months and we all love them. Silly songs greatest hits is by far my most valuable CD. We are heart broken that they got the rights to the characters. We will pray for you and I cannot wait for your book in March.
Speaking of such…do you get any income from any Big Idea produced before the suit? We just do not want to support a product that is not supporting you…ie Gideon and the Tuba war? Much LOVE… The Minnichs
Thankyou so much for creating Vegie Tales and being part of God’s plan to hugely impact so many people through them, our young son, Sam, included. The pirates who don’t do anything are a family favourite and the many quotable quotes from various videos, repeated at choice moments, have lit up our lives over the years.
I wasn’t aware of what had happened with ownership until just now when my husband found out and let a whole lot of interested folk know of this site and your explanation. We are awfully sad for you and the injustice of it all. Take heart that around the world (we’re in Western Australia) people care and are asking God’s will be done in this situation and in your own life. Bless you guys!
Phil,
My family and I visited your studio back in the 90’s with brother-in-law Tim Trax. It was an experience I will always remember.
So sorry to hear this sad story. Sorry to hear that you lost the company in a law suit… sorry to see that God is being removed from the shows…
I am glad that you are moving on to produce more God centered shows for the kids… you have a real gift from God and I am glad that you are finding joy even in this hard stuff. I will pray for you and your team and future endeavors to spread God’s word.
Dale
Thanks for writing, Phil. I’m an early-20’s student who enjoyed VeggieTales as much as my younger siblings, and I ache to see what it has become since you left.
Can you tell us where we might be able to direct feedback to NBC (polite of course) expressing disagreement with the decision to remove all references to God?
Thank you so much for letting parents like myself know why and how God was taken out of the Saturday morning VeggieTales. I was astonished like many other parents of how God had been taken out of the picture! Anyway, you have 100% made it clear that you still have good intentions and your heart is in the right place. I wish you and your family the best and may God bless you and be with you on your next adventure.
I would like to add that you have been an inspiration to me in my journey (Fellowship Friends) to teach young children God’s word. It is for a younger audience but our mission is still the same. I am excited to hear about your book and will be purchasing it as soon as it is released. It can easily start in a basement or home office, but with one little swoop it can all be taken away. God has bigger plans for you than just VeggieTales! Our purpose can change in an instance, if that is God plans. Maybe you can help/mentor others, like myself, that are starting out and need coaching on things to do and NOT to do! You have expierenced a wonderful thing and need to share it with the world!
Thank you so much for all your work and ministry!
Phil,
Thank you for all that you have done to raise the bar in regards to the quality of kids content in the Chirstian community. I have always believed that the world should follow the lead of the church – we have not done this in regards to content for kids over the years. Phil and Big Idea began a movement in 1993 of creative people that have sought to bring great Christian content and I thank you for this Phil.
I would also like to point out that just because Bob and Larry don’t quote chatper and verse does not mean that God’s truth is not being taught to the children of this country who are watching Veggietales. It may not be perfect how Phil and others may have wanted this to turn out – but God is working thru the Veggie content on NBC.
I talk to parents every day in my retail store and the fact that they have seen Veggietales on NBC opens doors for discussion about the Lord.
Resonding to the folks out there that seen to think Big Idea is getting rich and they sold out for the big bucks with NBC. It is my understanding that the partnership that has created “Qubo” had to purchase the right for the Saturday morning block. As a result this is an expense.
Thank you Jesus for people like Phil who allow God’s creativity to work thru them!!
Phil – Having had a brief chance to watch you grow up and knowing your mother’s strong and righteous character, I would have been surprised if your explanation had been anything less than what it was. My own two sons were pre teenagers when Veggie Tales first came out and we watched many videos together. One had a VT necktie that he wore for several years. Your gift was evident when you were still the small boy with the big glasses and it is so exciting to see how that gift has been used. Your blog shimmers with your wit and brillilance of mind. I enjoy telling people I knew you way back when. May God continue to honor your integrity and your faithfullness to your calling.
Well, this is clarifying, esp. the fact that Big Idea, Inc. is not in any way overseen by Phil and is doing most of the edits to the shows themselves. But a few questions remain: It’s obvious that Phil never agreed to cut out “God made you special, etc.” To the contrary, he’d been verbally assured that he wouldn’t have to. Even if he felt that he couldn’t go back on his agreement to write the frame material (I gather this is what it is), couldn’t he have refused to cut the “God made you special” line? He could have sent the material to Big Idea, Inc., with that in there and told _them_ to cut it i they were going to give in like that to NBC. Here’s another option: Cut it in an obvious and clunky way. Like this: Bob says, “____made you special, and He loves you very much.” Just make the word ‘God’ silent, so it’s obvious what they made you do and what word is missing. Sure, NBC and Big Idea, Inc., aren’t going to _like_ that. Sure, they probably won’t let it go that way. Sure, they’ll probably take over at that point and put in some replacement themselves. But it’s a kind of resistance, a way of showing that you aren’t going to cooperate actively in making God invisible in the show by smoothing over and replacing the cut reference to God. You’ve resisted the de-God-ing of the show while keeping your verbal agreement to write the material and even any further agreement, vaguely and deceptively worded, that might have existed, to edit it to NBC’s “standards.”
And here’s another question: Phil apparently has a contract (this is mentioned on another post, but he doesn’t say there for how long) to write one episode of VT per year for Big Idea, Inc, and to do all the voices. That’s pretty significant. How long is that contract for, and will Phil continue it if it means he has to write each new episode so it either doesn’t have God in it or can have God easily removed? Shouldn’t the relationship with Big Idea, Inc., be renegotiated as soon as legally possible given what’s happened with the NBC thing? How about that movie with Universal? Will it have God removed so it can be put on TV?
Thanks Phil. Don’t pay attention to the critics. Something is better than nothing. I think NBC’s attitude is ignorant, biggoted, and ridiculous, but a watered down Veggie Tales is better than 99.9% of the children’s programming these days. NBC would be well served to reach out to Christians. I think they would benifit the way FOXNews benifitted from a dissaffected news consumer. That they wouldn’t is proof positive that ratings and dollars are not always king when it comes to these networks. Their agenda is sometimes more important. It’s clear that NBC is controlled by the same evangellical secularists that run most of the rest of the media. That they would even give “values” programming a chance must be seen as a victory.
Veggie Tales is wonderful. I’ve got a new 6 month old who will see all of his older brother’s tapes as well as new material. Thank you for all of that. Regardless of your personal business and professional situation, there are millions of us who can’t express enough how much we appreciate you.
Wow, another Lydia. never saw that coming…
Hiiiiii! Lydia!
Hey Phil I know your swamped. You and Liz have told me that many times, lol. Glad you liked my Larry Model. Its soo much fun now that I’ve figured out how you guys model them. Working on Bob and Junior right now so to speak. ^^)
Buuuut, whenare you gonna update? *biiig grin*
Thank you Phil for Bob and Larry and the gang. I have always respected your honor with telling the truth.Thank you. WE are a pastor family with 4 small children. They have watched Veggie Tales since birth. They know and love the stories. As far as NBC, even without God mentioned, I am glad that Veggies Tales is on. I am glad that the children watching are getting some moral content. I pray that as they watch this edited tal, they will want more and mommy, daddy or grandparents will go and find the full version with God in it.There is more than one way for God to get HIs message out. Thanks again. a very tired momma of 4.
Hey Mr. Phil,
Thanks so much for that informative post. I looovvvveeee VeggieTales. I’m 14 years old, and I can’t remember a time when I didn’t “know” Bob and Larry. I’ve grown up knowing that God made me special, and He loves me very much. I can’t believe that they took that line out!!! That’s like cutting out the hearts of the Veggies! I’m so, so sorry. How frustrating that must be! I have seven younger brothers and sisters, and we all adore the the Veggies. They’re actually my dad’s favorite kids videos =) Thanks for all the work you put into them. We love you and everyone else who brings the Veggies to life!
Rememer, God made you (and me!) special, and He loves us very much.
-Kayla
Dear Phil,
A friend pointed out the link to your story based on a conversation that we had last night. After reading the entire story, I’m not entirely shocked at the result, but am saddened that you had to endure all of that.
As a Christian who works in the entertainment industry, it is often difficult to witness non-Christians try to create product for the Christian marketplace. In fact, in my office alone, we have a number of “Christian”-based products. In one of the funniest staff meetings I have sat through came the statement, “Saint Paul had an incredibly dramatic life. Did you know that his name was once Saul and he persecuted the same people that now look on him as a Saint?” I just chuckled to myself at the naivety, but felt saddened that these people do not see the Light.
Everyone here knows that I am a Christian, but they don’t ridicule me for it. In fact, they don’t treat me any differently than that of the rest of the office. But what surprises me the most is that they won’t even come to me to find out if they are even heading in the right direction when it comes to the Christian marketplace. They think they know what is best and what Christians will buy into, yet they won’t even check to see if their information is accurate or Biblical.
Keep fighting the good fight and pursuing the Truth. Remember to put on the full Armor of God.
Peace in Christ!
Phil,
Lemme throw my 2 cents of support onto the dogpile. Your heart is right out there on your sleeve for everybody to see. You’re OK, brother.
It’s a long war, and sometimes you gotta fall back and attack a different way. You’re in the enemy’s camp and with God’s help you’ll plunder it for His glory. And even if not, so what? You’ve got lots and lots of fans out here, huddling around your little oasis in the “vast wasteland”. NBC is the one hurting for money and viewers … do your dozen episodes, say “sayonara”, and see what happens.
Some of these Christian brothers and sisters need to stop projecting their own dreams for this franchise onto the reality and calling you a sell-out. You’re keeping your word and your integrity.
I’m 41 and me and my kids fight over the new VT’s coming into our house. It’s a gas!
Wow! Thanks for the full story on this Phil. I have been a fan since the beginginnig and will always be one. Just remember what God said to Jeremiah – “For behold the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.” (Jer. 29:11) I bet God’s got great big plans for your creations! He uses us and what we do in this world to touch so many others, even if the devil and those he controls try to stop us. They may have “edited God out” but He will see to it that people get His message! So have faith!
I have 5 beautiful children who I am extremely picky about their “Saturday morning fun”. We were about to give up on Saturday morning cartoons, admittedly a great American ritual, because of the down-right JUNK on the other channels. (we don’t have satellite and there’s not a cable long enough to get to our house). I appreciate you following through and putting Veggie Tales on regular TV, even though the cost was great. However, if the audience buys the movies from the store, they will still hear that “God made them special and loves them very much”. Keep the Faith and be encouraged! God is still on the throne, and last I checked, still in control. 🙂
Mr and Mrs Vischer,
Thanks for the understanding. Glad to see God is still the biggest idea you maintain. I’d like to add a little comfort if I may. We all know God’s word is the truth and will stand. But, his word is more than just truth. It’s the substance which determines the outcome. If an astronaut is reentring the atmosphere they must come in at a certain angle or they’ll burn up of bounch off into space. That’s a principle. God’s word works the same way. If He says it, prescribes it then it will do exactly what He says it will do. Keep it up no matter what. Someone must be left to be sons and daughters of the most high god. He’s worth it. God bless and keep you always.
Well i wish i would have read this page first!!
(i have been perusing the site)Phil i emailed you and asked if you were gonna write a book about what happened to you – never mind that now! 🙂
Guess I will pick up a copy of Me Myself and BOB when it comes out!
Dear Mr. Vischer,
I admire your integrity, honesty, courage and vulnerability in this issue. It must be very painful to see your vision changed because of a lawsuit that happened in the past. I am very glad to know the whole story and will make sure others know it too. Your origional Veggie Tales are still the best things on the market! I should know, I have watched many children’s shows as a first grade teacher and given advice to parents over the years on what to watch or buy for their kids. Veggie Tales is one of my top reccommendations. You have my family’s support in your new endeavors as well as the present ones you need to finish. Thanks for staying true to the One who gifted you even when it got difficult.
Your’s in Christ,
A Big Fan
Phil, saw the article in the Trib the other day. All I can say is God bless, man. Sorry that you’ve been unfairly judged and had old wounds reopened.
My family and I will continue to support whatever new products you create. You’re responsible for a great deal of joy, conviction and great memories with my kids.
My three year old drags his Larry doll everywhere, elects to have Larry speak for him (“Larry wants more chicken nuggets”) and is trick or treating this year in a Larry costume that his grandma sewed. God bless you for making that possible.
This has been very interesting reading your blog and other info on the internet about the adventures of VT’s. Thx for keeping the info out there! I think the thing that rubs Christian parents about the NBC deal is that deep down we know what it is. The episodes airing on NBC are probably the best childrens programming on the network. The folks involved in Big Deal, currently and formerly, probably all have the best of intentions and are fighting the good fight. And, the newly edited episodes will benefit any child watching them, Christian or not. Many of us parents always viewed VT’s, though, as one of our weapons in the fight …. one of Gods weapons. In any battle, you not only have to fight, but also work to marginalize the weapons of your enemy. Many of us feel that one of our weapons has been marginalized by our enemy. NBC is only the agent here, not neccesarily the enemy himself. Thank you for providing the goodness of these characters and stories for us. I pray that you will help provide us with more tools(weapons) do defend the kingdom. And there is still plenty of great VT material available in the market!
nbc.comYou can see the show summaries for “Veggie Tales” and “3-2-1 Penguins/Larry Boy Storys” at
After reading those and these blogs by Phil, I agree that NBC probably didn’t do their homework, and may have taken these spins at face value. Of course, this also means that someone along the line wasn’t as forthcoming about the series as they should have been.
Even so, I think that NBC may have already realized how substantial cutting every single Bible/God reference could be. For instance, both “3-2-1 Penguins” stories that I’ve seen so far include the bedtime prayers scenes. While I don’t suppose that they’ll ever leave all references unedited, I think that in the interest of simply having enough cohesive material to air, they’ve had and will have to make some compromises.
So, perhaps there is some hope after all.
I’m looking forward to reading Me, Myself, & Bob, Phil. If the story of Big Idea Productions presented here is any indication of what’s in that book, it should be very good, indeed.
I was so blessed to see you this am on “Life Today” show and hear the last part of your testimony. Praise the Lord! I did not even know what had happened to you and your company. God’s grace is sufficient.
I am a preschool Director at a Christian school and intend to purchase your new book for the children.
I relate to your testimony from past experiences and it helps me to remember to keep God and my love relationship with HIM as the first dream and goal of my life!
Thank you so much,
Elaini Dedascalou
Saw you on the Robison’s today–explaining the whole story yet again! I don’t understand why so many people are surprised by the censorship (let’s call it what it is) or the way that political correctness taken too far actually helps the other side in this battle. The rest of the he-said she-said stuff is really beside the point, yet everyone seems to focus on it. I hope that you can see that the way the Lord has used this is not only maturation and growth for you but also vindication. I want to say you should be proud, but we all know where our usual definition of proud leads!! 🙂 I am torn between boycotting NBC (which I rarely watch anyway) and watching the Qubo block just so they don’t cancel what little ground we have in network tv. Did you know the cable companies can look with a keystroke what channels you watch? My mom found this out when she had service issues with them and said she only watched daystar and they looked it up while she was on the phone and said ” oh, you’re telling the truth”. Anyway, we all need to keep in mind who the real enemy is, and keep letting God use you, Mr. Phil. As a mother, I am anxiously awaiting all the veggies and jellies you can send out! God bless and keep you.
Phil,
I can only imagine what you’ve been through. I don’t have any deep and insightful thoughts. Becky C. quoted Jer. 29:11 and I have to second that. You did a wonderful thing, bringing Bob and Larry into the world and although I will miss them as they were, I can’t wait to see where God leads you.
You impacted and continue to impact so many young lives and I can only thank you from the bottom of my heart for the impact you’ve had on my children. God will lead you through this – He has a wonderful plan for you.
Just remember, God made you special and He loves you very much.
Blessings abundant…
God bless you, I had no idea that Big Idea was no longer your company until I saw you on the Robison show. I am so thankful for you sharing your story, I’m going to buy your book you talked about on the show, I’m like your wife, kinda messy and in need of LOTS of grace. I look forward to all God is doing and will continue to do in your life, I pray there are many more stories for you to tell for our children. Thank you
I’ll be praying for Sidney & Norman! I truely feel for you, it sounds like a vary hard and painful situation to be in. I encourage you to watch the movie “Time Changers” if you haven’t already seen it. The Devil is perfectly comfortable with morals being taught as long as the name of Jesus Christ is not attached to it. After all, a man with good morals who doen’t have a relationship with Christ is condemed along with the man with bad morals. The Devil does have a strangle hold on network television and this is no doubt his work. Have heart though, Romans 8:28 says “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” God will even use this for good in conforming you more and more to the image of Christ. Through our struggles we are blessed. “Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.” Romans 1:12
Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed seeing you and hearing your heartfelt story on TV with Robison. I was channel surfing and was captivated by your story. I’ve never watched a VT but I will make sure my 2 year old grandson sees them and meets all your friends. You are truly a light that glorifies our Lord. Thank you for that.
P.S. Isn’t it puzzling that every other phrase on TV today is “Oh my god” but to reveal and revel in His love for each of us is prohibited and offensive?
I saw you on the Robison’s James “Life Today” show this week. I think it was a “God-thing” due to my going home sick and turning on the TV to hear that you would be on. I always loved your work and was pleasantly surprised to see VT on the fall kids line-up. I didn’t know what you went through losing VT. I went through in 2004-2005 a nine month period without a job and was asking “what do you want me to do” to God, without an answer. I have had dreams and none seemed to be able to turn into reality. When I heard you speak and the scriptures you tied together with your life experence I was really moved and feel like there is still hope for me too. I hope that how you told your story (along with the scriptures) will all be in your book “Me, Myself & Bob” I look forward to its release so I can read it. In fact my brother is going through a period of searching due to work changes. I really can’t wait to get at least one (probably more) copies of your book. I appreaciate your work and more importantly your God given talent and hope to see even more from you! May God continue to bless and give you fortune!
Mr. Vispher, Thank you for your comments on the Life Today show when you said it was like watching someone else raise your children (veggie tales ideas). That really hit home. I just want you to know that as a christian entertainer, I’m REALLY praying for you!! I’m soooo glad that you have used and are willing to use the awesome gifts that God has given you to bless the rest of us! 🙂 God has placed on my heart to really pray for the
entertainment community (christian). All writers,muscians,actors,
dancers, videographers ect. May we glorify Him in our gifts!!! 🙂
Phil, I had no idea. Here I thought that the guy who started the veggies in his basement was getting on NBC and I had no clue until this morning and stumbling on your blog how it really all turned out.
I’m so sorry that all of this transpired and that God’s justice doesn’t happen sooner than heaven. I hope you can sleep sweetly at night knowing that a ton of people admire your integrity and are really proud of what you did for us and our kids. The good ripples in the water from your ministry are still spreading.
Phil, you’ve been hearing this a lot, but THANK YOU! I’ve been a Veggie fan since I was 25 and am now almost 32. My 2 year old son learned how to say BOB before Grandpa. A lot of who that little boy is, is because of what you originally put out there. Thank you for putting God out there for kids in a fresh, original and understandable way!
May God bless you and your family in all your current and future endeavors!!!
by the way my kid’s grandpa is named “Bob” – really that is his name – so he very much enjoyed watching “Bob” the tomato with his grandkids … just watched you on Huntly Street last night, it is truly amazing how God brings us through every season in life … I also “worked” for the Lord in a couple of Christian ministries for over 10 years until he took me out … led me to a non-Christian workplace … where I quickly learned that my relationship with Him was hinged on the fact that I “worked” for Him … I thank Him for teaching me the basics or else where would I end up ??? …
… but Lord I did such great and wonderful things in your name … “I never knew you”
Praise God, I learned a lesson from the Bible … I am special to God and He does love me very much … His love helps me to learn the lessons I need to learn
See you in Glory !!!
Awesome, man
Dear Mr. Vischer,
I just finished your book Me, Myself, and Bob. As I write this my 20 month old son is in the next room watching Little Joe and my 6 year old daughter is in her room watching the Return of Larryboy. We have seen the new NBC shows and although we are glad to see some good on “regular” tv the first thing my 14 and 15 year olds said was where is the bible verse and my 6 year old said they forgot to tell us we are special and God loves us very much. We all have peaks and valleys in our walk toward heaven. Don’t ever for one minute think that God didn’t use your dream to impact the lives of everyone who has ever and will ever see the original Veggie Tales. I have 5 children ages 20 years down to 20 months. Each one loves the bible stories with veggies. Maybe it is Gods plan to use political correctness on NBC to get the people who are on the fence so to speak to see how simple and powful Gods love is when they buy their first Veggie Tales video and see what the show is really about. “God” Simply put. I asked my 6 year old what she thought Veggie Tales was about she looked at me, smiled turned her head a little and said “it’s about sharing and God” That’s it Mr. Vischer. You have never failed when one of his little children knows that you were telling them about God through your stories. He is using you and will continue as you let Him. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to finish your book as I started chapter 22 through the tears. I am so glad you wrote the book and I’m so glad you are free. God Bless you and all those who helped you bring the Veggie’s to life. I pray that you will all stay focused on Him and His will and that He will Bless you all beyond your wildest Dreams.
Deb.
Hi, nice site!
Thanks for the explanation, I’m so glad I found it.
Honestly, when Veggie Tales was big in the mid to late nineties I was not into it at all b/c of the high voiced characters, but now I have a three year old who loves Veggie Tales and I couldn’t be happier.
He’s been watching the Christmas movie about Buzz Saw Louie about 3 times a day, and it starts out near the beginning with the line, “…from Lombard, Illinois,” and being from Wheaton myself, it hits home every time that I know it’s not at that location anymore and not even under the original ownership. So every time I hear that line, I wondered what really happened, so thanks for the clarification.
do
Thanks for sticking to your faith in God and proclaiming those values and not selling out like so many other Christians in entertainment seem to do.
I’m sorry things went the way they did. Hopefully if you create a new set of characters and stories you can grow slowly and have lots of good advice on what it will take to preserve and maintain your company just how you’d like to.
Thanks again for Veggie Tales, I’ll give you the credit!
Dear Mr. Vicher,
My name is Angele, I know your daughter, Sydney.
I really think it’s sad that you don’t own Big Ideas anymore.
If any one should own it, it should be you.
I think you deserve all the credit! 🙂
-Angele G. Bubna
Hello vischers this is your cousin lisa i wanted to say high i was thinking about you guys so i googled ya imagine that you were here anyway i hope everything is going good for you and the family love your cousin tod.
I have read through this explanation. It is truly a sad day in the world. Satan is having his way with the world. Obama in the White House, the government taking over our lives, one worlders wanting to ‘unite’ the world, etc. Add to this that NBC (Satan’s personal TV network) has managed to take VeggieTales and totally remove the ‘Sunday Morning Values and Saturday Morning Fun’.
I am truly ashamed for all who had this happen and didn’t stop it. However, I have to remember that Satan is a powerful individual. To me, more and more, it seems that God is sitting on the sidelines and letting Satan have his way. The demise of VeggieTales is just another example of this.
My family and I bought LarryBoy and the Bad Apple DVD. However, this is the last VeggieTales movie, DVD, toy or any other item we will ever purchase.
It truly is sad when Satan wins (again and again and again). I pray that God will put an end to all this and soon.
Come on Jon! Lift up your eyes! God is on the move and the whole Earth will be full of His glory. You give satan way too much credit. Feed yourself on good things… there are good things happening in the world.
Personally, I thought the last few episodes were very good. I thought Mike and Tim did a good job on the second Minnesota Cuke story. Larry wearing a sack was very funny.
To respond to Jon’s comments—but, what if a child sees Veggie Tales for the first time on NBC and then wants to see other shows. So, he and his parents are at Walmart or Sams Club and sees the DVD’s and his parents buy one for him. And his heart is open for the first time to the REAL Veggie Tales and hears more about God…and wants to know more. Or, who knows…maybe his parents want to see more of the REAL Vegge Tales and their hearts are open to God through Bob and Larry.
Jon, you may see NBC’s editing as the end of Veggie Tales but I see it as a crack in the door for those who are curious about what’s on the other side. And guess who is waiting on the other side of that door…the Son who knocks.
Whether you buy anymore dvd’s or not is entirely up to you but keep in mind that if you stop and others stop, that could bring an end to the mission of Big Ideas and that’s when Satan wins. But, if you give up your support, how much easier will it be for Satan to “win”?
There is always a willingness to see things in a sense of the immediate instead of long term. I see a reason for why Big Idea has been around for over 15 years.
I believe that God still has a plan for Veggie Tales and all other Christian animation studios. So, “Be Not Discouraged”. As long as Big Idea still gives the world it’s daily requirement of Veggie Tales…Satan hasn’t won a thing.
Rick – you have made some valid points. I wish it was all true. However, I see NBC being able to push around VeggieTales, editing it and then show it as a secular show is nothing short of a victory for Satan. NBC has shown numerous mockeries of the Bible (remember that despicable Noah’s Ark show? It made the flood look like a giant keg party with people cruising around having a good time in the flooded world).
So, do you get in bed with Satan to make your point or hope of planting the mustard seed? I understand of your point of a child seeing VT on NBC and wanting to see more. However, do you go as far as putting VeggieTales on Logo or Bravo networks (well known homosexual networks)? What is the limit? How far are Christians willing to go to get their message out? Is there no other way to get this message out? VeggieTales seem to be getting their message out fine without having to sign on with one of Satan’s leading networks – NBC. Seems pretty bad to me.
I hope that VeggieTales will pull out of NBC entirely and that it remember its roots. Unfortunately, I (and others in my church) will stand my ground and not get in bed with the devil by purchasing, viewing or having anything to do with VT merchandising.
I actually think it would be fantastic if Veggie Tales or any good Christian show was on a homosexual network. Gay people need to hear the message of Jesus’ love just as much as you or anyone else. God wants us to love our neighbours, and that includes gay people. And hookers. And filmmakers. Also, I don’t know how you can call NBC Satan’s network. It may have sinful influences, but that is just because the people leading it are blinded – yes by the devil, but it doesn’t mean it is promoting satanic messages. thats is a bit extreme.
Anyway, if it is satan’s network, don’t you want all the kids watching that network to hear about God. because you do know that about half of the vt episodes on NBC aren’t edited, don’t you? Any it is better than materialistic, empty tv anyway like someone else said.
All the best Jon, I hope you grow in God and fulfil His purpose for you.
Jonathan
Good discussion. I was wondering, however if Jon was aware of what actually happened to Big Idea (i.e. the “Me, Myself, & Bob” book that Phil Vischer wrote). A long story & if I remember correctly, didn’t most of the remaining creative folks finally get let go last December? So with the present owners, there are no “previous roots” to remember or go back to. Things have changed completely since the beginning.
So, yes, I agree that VT isn’t what it used to be, but certainly liked & appreciated the original material, the intent, & the God Honoring passion that was accomplished by them. (If I said at this point that I REALLY would like to see more “Jonah” like movies, no surprise, right?).
Not to get into a long discourse (or the three page essay recently written called “Visual Media is a valid Mission Field”) but what does “getting into bed with the devil” really mean? Using Jesus’ examples of going to the sinners to preach to them (not compromising, or using watered down gospel) but using God Honoring material is a good thing. Just like the folks who did “Jericho” with the LEGO’s movie, or the previous VT shows, I believe they can do good work even in the bad places or odd networks. Again, who did Jesus spend a lot of time in compassionate preaching to?
Respectfully, trying to learn, grow & share with compassion like He did,
VMV
Thank you for your explanation, although you didn’t owe us anything I was very happy to read about what happened. I really hope you make a comeback in a big way. The children of today need to know and hear about God every chance they can get. If a man can use animated vegetables to bring kids closer to God then I believe that man can start over, create a new cartoon and have just as much if not more success!
Hey there sir God bless you. I was reading your story and it is compelling I am considering venturing out into full time ministry. We already have church in my home with a few loyal members but it’s always been about God and music for me. I have similar goals and desires to spread the gospel. I just wanted to connect with you to ask some questions. I have also reached out to Sherwood Baptist Church (Sherwood Pictures) I am praying and seeking wisdom from others who have done it already. Thank you for your time
Thank you so much for sharing your story. All three of my children (and my wife & I) have watched and loved VeggieTales—the humor, the wonderful characters, and—above all—the message in each story. We are—I’ll admit—a more secular household, but your stories—and the biblical verse each is built upon—have been an amazing way to help us show our children how people can be good and loving to each other. I’m so sorry to learn that this happened to you—I suspected something when the character of the shows changed, but had no idea what the story was. Keep up the excellent work in whatever you do next, and know that no one can take away the gift you’ve given to all of us, and the generations of lives you’ve touched through your stories. Thank you, and, of course, the One who inspired you.
brian henson wants the muppets back today. thank you.
My family was reminiscing about watching veggies tale so of course a web search was initiated. I was glad to find this.
