Episode 151: 40 Days of Christian Media
HAD to comment on this week’s podcast! Regarding the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight. My son bought the fight (note my qualification ;-)-and by the way he’s nearly 40 so I guess he’s allowed). Boxing in my family goes back to the 20’s/30’s when my grandfather was a boxer and then a manager. I really think it is the Big Dog vs. Underdog–Good Guy vs. Villian that attracts us. In the promo interviews, Mayweather made the comment (this will cause Christian’s head to spin, it did mine!) “Money isn’t everything, it’s the ONLY thing.” OOOOOOHHHH how we were rooting for Pacquiao! By all appearances, he is such a humble man, it would have been wonderful to see him win, and yes, ashamedly, I was a bit loud in my cheering, to the amusement of my kids (all grown). Retrospectively, I was thinking, geez, Nancy, Jesus died for the guy you were calling a “thug” last night–how ’bout some mercy…Thanks for listening–Skye, just bought Futureville, very good so far, I also bought it for a girl I mentor along with “With” as she is HUNGRY for communion! PLEASE keep giving us great mind-food to chomp on guys!

Very interesting episode. My wife and I are “media missionaries” living in Spain and creating programs for countries where traditional missionary efforts are not possible. We collaborate across many national and denominational lines and find that the most unadulterated versions of stories taken from the Bible seem to have the longest shelf life. Most of our team has come from the “secular” business world, and we collectively cringe at mainstream, highly produced and funded “Christian” media. We wrestle daily with the topic you discussed on your latest episode, including your reference to the shallow pool of talent (which frightens me to death because I may be the baseline HA!) I find it interesting that by avoiding American Christian culture we are able to create with more freedom and avoid the media critics, both “secular” and “Christian” who throw those rotten tomatoes (sorry Bob) at the screen. For example, I’m working in post production on the story of Tamar, part of our Women of the Bible series that will be translated from Spanish to Arabic, and then to English, and any other language we can get our hands on. These stories of the women mentioned in the line of Christ, Ruth, Rahab, etc… seem like they have been ripped from today’s headlines. Many Christians have told us not to touch the story of Tamar because it is too difficult and seedy. We did it anyway and watching Spanish actors portray the story in front of the camera engages your heart and holds your attention. In fact, I am so moved by this story that I am amazed that this R-rated gem has been left untouched. The story of Tamar will engage women who understand honor killings, tribalism and survival. And as an extra added benefit, we can now put Onan’s underpants in our prop museum. I enjoy the podcast and you guys keep me thinking… many blessings,
