The Church at the transition into the 20th century had a much stronger engagement with the work world. Evangelical churches labored to protect young women in city workplaces, for instance, and they fought for workplace justice issues.
Today, about the most we see is how to start a workplace Bible study and how to be a good employee who doesn’t rock the boat. This is a pale reflection of the involvement of 100 years ago. If anything, it seems like the Church is in the pocket of business, scared to question anything that happens amid that sea of cubicles.
We spend more time at work than anything else we do during the week. How this continues to go unaddressed in most churches is frustrating.
which sabbath is that referring to LOL
except in saturday sabbath churches…. we talk about work. 😛 or, rather, NOT working, because of the sacredness of the saturday sabbath…. 😛 😛
phil, whaaat? swimming?? was she adventist? that was a big one when my mom was a kid in the adventist church too! and the movies too – evil! sooo totally true for my mom/grandmas generations.
now things are “less strict” but im not sure if thats entirely a good thing. though, i think swimming goes a little too far! but going out to eat? understandable. you’re making someone else work. not exactly a blessing to the working person… and movies… really, theres slim pickings if you want to be going to a movie thats actually good to watch… lol
some new thing i heard recently was that there were some christians who were NOT leaving tips at restaurants, and leaving pamphlets instead. talk about rude!
