In Brazil, voting is mandatory. But it doesn’t mean people pay more attention to the candidates. Most people do not even know what each politician’s job is.
Our options are not very good as well. And we do have a fine, but it’s very insignificant, honestly. You can justify your absence later and pay the few dollars.
Another down side of the mandatory vote is that candidate buy votes, especially of the poor and uneducated. Sometimes they buy it with small things like food for a week, and sometimes they pay with a promise, to build a hospital or a school that never leaves the blueprint.
