Slavery ended in America with the stroke of a pen in 1865, but the 13th Amendment didn’t end institutional racism. Not even close. Phil and his law professor brother Rob recently taught a class that touched on the Black Lives Matter movement, asking and attempting to answer the question, “Why so angry? Isn’t racism over?” Sure, the 19th century was tough. But what’s happened since then? Phil mentioned the class on a recent podcast, and numerous listeners wanted to hear more. So… here we go! From Reconstruction to Black Lives Matter, we take a look at the last 125 years of race relations in America!

That was my line about the Thuggee Cult in Temple of Doom!
“Moral to me…” 🙂 If morals cannot “hang in thin air” without a basis, then those of like moral foundation must believe in a like moral basis. Yes?
A society with societal unity to some degree….would best be established and held together based upon the citizens owning, believing in, and functioning under a like moral foundation. ( the moral “tree”? ) Yes?
Can genuine religious / cultural / moral pluralism truly be a part of a healthy society’s world view and plan? If so, how does such a society “look”…?
how can I get a copy of your brother’s slides and notes you use in the podcast? this was a very good podcast and relevant to what’s being played out in America today.
I’d like a copy of the slides as well to share with members of my church and family.
Anyone receive these?
holypost.comI turned it into a video posted at http://www.holypost.com – but never distributed slides standalone. Video works pretty well to get the points across.
Gerald J,
Did Phil ever send those slides about race relations? Could you pass them on to me?
Phil,
Are you able to provide the slides, or can the info be passed on in some other way? These were very insightful!
I would like this too!
Best podcast from you guys that I have heard to date. Eye-opening, relevant, and heart-breaking facts. Thanks for reading those slides!
Wow. I thought I was a lot more aware of this stuff now because I realized discrimination isn’t always conscious, but I didn’t know much of the history of racial discrimination and separation. Listening to this, I kept thinking, “Wow. It’s worse than I thought!” I’m usually very hard to shock, but… wow.
Thank you for this. I don’t think a lot of people get or are even aware of all the history that has flowed from slavery through to today. Also, good word from Skye about starting with empathy.
Sister do you have a complaint?
35 a backed up drain,
Of exhaust fumes and emotions raging higher, almost onto my friend,
I never did it personally,
So why’s your anger still upon me?
Meanwhile separate but equal is “gone”,
But it turns into a silent song.
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us.
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us.
They might believe just like me,
The picture of John 17,
And while we work together on Monday,
There remains two churches on Sunday.
It’s just too long a commute,
I want to keep this house so cute,
Meanwhile there’s a ghost in the deed, says he depreciates property value.
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us
Philando worked in a school just like me,
Some of my dear friends are police,
There’s got to be some deeper answers if we’re not gonna explode in a violent age.
Case by case, separately,
To each responsibility,
So justice cries for the match lit of red lined streets when souls needed to eat.
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us
Jesus prayed to unite us.
Street signs divide us
When there’s people on 35, have I asked why?
When it’s nicer in Hale or Dimond Lake, have I asked why?
When there’s bars on windows by cup foods, have I asked why?
When North get’s so much distain, have I asked why?
When I’m hesitant to raise children in Philips, have I asked why?
When no wealth’s passed on to the kids, distrust of “work hard, get rich?”,
Non-violent jails get biz, when they say that’s just the way it is, have I asked why?
Or when Jesus prayed that we’d be one, do I ask, “but why?”
This was such a helpful podcast, I’ve listened to it twice already. Is there ANY way to get some of these statistics in written form? So many people I know need to hear some of these things but I won’t be able to get them to sit down and listen to an hour long podcast (which is incredibly lazy).
Enjoyed the video – very enlightening and balanced. Do you have sources?
holypost.comYes indeed! Right here… https://www.holypost.com/post/racism-video-transcript-w-citations
