Irish composer Keith Getty has been writing modern hymns like “In Christ Alone” for two decades, and now he’s written – wait for it – a BOOK! About singing! Keith joins Phil and Skye on the podcast to talk worship music, singing together, and how to stay focused on God when everyone around you wants another HIT worship song. PLUS – Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K. Hollywood has been behaving very badly, and Phil and Skye ponder if it’s a new thing, or a very, very old thing made visible in a new way. Come on along for the ride!

I found myself nodding in agreement throughout this episode. However, as much as I decry the commercialization of worship music and the CCM industry in general I really wonder about Mr. Getty’s assertion:
“This is the first generation in human history where the songs we sing isn’t curated by church leaders……the only difference between the CCM industry being bankrupt forever and still floating is the money they’re making from church worship….you’ve got Wall Street companies belting all their publicity into the church all the time to try and sell stuff.”
The movers and shakers in the worship “industry” for easily the last decade ARE churches. Hillsong. Bethel. Lakewood – just to name a few.
So the music IS being curated by church leaders and very influential ones at that. Yes, there’s money behind it – but it’s COMING from and published by churches.
CCLI may be getting a cut from congregational worship – but churches are writing this stuff and pushing it all.
