Watch your metaphors, Christians! We can be misunderstood! Phil tells the story of his great uncle Iner. If that isn’t fun enough, Skye then explains the origins of evangelicalism and fundamentalism in America, and the gang discusses comedian Louis CK’s recent musings about the “emptiness” inside all of us. Whee!!

The author you were reading who projected what might have
happened , if Sarah Palin had become President , was keying
in on the fear created by the likes of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority
Movement , which sought to establish an overwhelming presence
of Fundamentalist ( in the good sense ) Christians into office on
every level from the President on down to the local School Board
Members . There were many co-players such as Pat Robertson’s
700 Club and Jim Bakers PTL Club . It gained great momentum
and it appeared that Christians and Christianity might dominate
not only Politics but , popular culture as well . The secularists
( which referred to those whose philosophy was not based on
Biblical Principles but on the reasoning of men ) began to
rebel and against this Christianity Based Political Movement
and successfully ( with the help of many internal Christian
scandals ) beat back and totally discredited the Movement
using the media as an effective bludgeon .
During this time the media establishment kept circulating
rumors of large camps of well armed ( Militant ) Christian
Militias , hiding out in the hills of every state , waiting to
take all of the secularists captive once the Christian
Politicians had secured all of the seats of power . They
were very successful in scaring the general public with
this boogey man of Militant Christian Militias .
First of all, love the podcast! I listen to it at work all the time and you’ve inspired me to start experimenting with my own podcast and other audio projects.
And I just had a couple other random thoughts:
1. I’m actually kinda curious what the chords are for the theme song. I have a ukulele of my own and I’m always looking for songs to play on it and that would be an awesome one to have.
2. I think it’d be kinda cool during the theme song to hear you do impressions of characters that aren’t yours, like Larry or other veggies or any other impressions you might do. Also perhaps other voices you haven’t used for characters yet. Just a fun thought.
Keep up the good work!
Love your first video podcast, Phil. I also wish to ask: Your singing of the theme song as George from The Toy That Saved Christmas reminded me of his most recent appearance in Big River Rescue. You said in an interview once that Big River Rescue was the last episode you wrote for VeggieTales, but when I saw the end credits for “Saint Nicholas”, I discovered that you were credited for co-writing that script. Did you know what part of Saint Nicholas did you write for?
I came up with the idea for “Saint Nicholas” and submitted an outline. Big Idea had others write it, based on my outline. So the basic story is mine, but all the words came from others. (And “Big River Rescue” is the opposite. Others came up with the outline and wrote one version of the script. Big Idea asked if I could write a new version in a “big hurry.” So I don’t count that as one of my stories, since I just did a rewrite on someone else’s story.)
I loved this episode. I loved the story of Uncle Iner as well as Skye’s explanation of the historical origins of “fundamentalism.” But, I must offer 1 bit of hopefully constructive criticism: Not every cutesy side-comment that comes to Phil or Skye’s minds must be voiced! I enjoy the banter & back & forth, but for pete’s sake, you guys need to let each other get to the point of the story without umpteen tangental comments that each threaten to derail the conversation!
Okay, I’m done griping. I love the podcast and will continue to listen even if you keep up the incessant smart-aleck interruptions.
