Religious billboard wars break out in Time Square! The group discusses two upcoming “Christian-ish” movies that have folks (and/or Phil) a bit concerned, and then talks through the moral, economic and spiritual implications of the collapsing interest of Japan’s youth in … um … “physical contact” with the opposite sex. To put it another way, Japan is having no babies!! Is it Godzilla?!? Robots?!? And what does it mean for the future of (dum, dum, dum!) Western Civilization??

I’m about halfway through this podcast (better commute than expected), but I already have some thoughts.
First, everyone knows Darwin didn’t have a bulldog, he had a Beagle.
Also, here’s a start for Skye and his agnostic billboard campaign… http://trudatmusic.com/raw/agnostic-billboards/
Thanks for the podcast.
wimp.comGreat show. Loved Phil’s new endofwesterncivilizationasweknowit ditty and his subtle accent when quoting the exploding toilet victim’s attorney, among other great comments and input from Skye and Christian.
Unbroken sounds so fascinating. (Eager to read it.) I agree with Phil that a Billy Graham ending for such an amazing story would be a hard sell to an audience. I hope Jolie takes on the challenge and makes it work artistically.
Listening to the podcasts for some time, I share Phil’s passion and frustration regarding the state of Christian film making today. I truly believe that a key to approaching the Biblical material is to do it with humor, while maintaining a serious message from God at the heart of the story.
The Colbert and Stewarts are spreading their serious messages effectively thru humor. Recently you mentioned Louis C.K getting away with saying some outrageous truisms because “he’s just being funny”. Comedy is powerful. Solemness, not so much. Not it this westerncivilizationasweknowit. (John Cleese makes the point here, tho I don’t buy all he says: http://www.wimp.com/laughingserious/)
Really, I’m talking about a similar approach Phil has taken with Veggie Tales, only to gear the stories more toward “adults”. The story teller or film maker who is willing to offend boring, uptight Christians with his humor, and at the same time offend the God-haters with the truth of the Gospel, will likely win over many Christians like yourselves who aren’t afraid to laugh and maybe even more non-Christians who are looking for a reason to buy into Christianity.
Hey Phil, Christian, and Skye. You three have made a regular listener(now viewer) out of me! Keep up these funny and thought-provoking conversations.
As for upcoming Christian movies: Max Lucado’s book, “The Christmas Candle”, is heading to theaters next month. Senator Rick Santorum is one of the producers on that one( after the unsuccessful run for president, he decided he would take up a new job producing faith-based films instead). Also, Mark Burnett and Roma Downey have their “Son of God” film coming to theaters in February. It is supposed to be a big screen re-edit of the New Testament portion of “The Bible” miniseries with new scenes that haven’t been seen yet.
I am looking forward to next week’s podcast. Keep up the good work, y’all.
Grace and peace,
Kris
P.S.- I love “What’s in the Bible?” My wife says she has learned more from these DVDs than she has from years of Sunday School and/or church. My three-year-old is getting into them now, too. What, if anything, do you have planned for these characters after the final video in this series comes out? We definitely need more biblically faithful, gospel-centered content like this!
Phil,
Have you ever done a show on the gospel-centered hip hop of rappers like Lecrae, Trip Lee, and Shai Linne? I don’t remember seeing a podcast in the archives that mentions gospel-centered hip hop. If not, would you ever consider interviewing one of these artists?
Grace and peace,
Kris
love the podcast. I’d be interested in hearing some thoughts on GK Chesterton in process for being a Saint. Maybe a discussion better had with Rob in the room to keep a proper Catholic view rather than hearsay.
“holy hand grenade of antioch” 🙂
I agree with christain on the fact that the fredom from religion billboard dosent insult christianity it just states their point

npr.orgOne way to encourage Japanese to have more babies may be to make affordable daycare more available. This is apparently challenging, unless…
‘[Kathy Matsui, chief Japan strategist at Goldman Sachs] says government officials tell her that “eventually, robots will be able to take up and assume many of these tasks that women are currently doing at present.”‘
One couldn’t make this stuff up, could one?
