Hey y'all… I'm blogging. Look at me go. We figured it would be easier for me to update you frequently this way, so we've switched to a blogging format for philvischer.com. Hope you don't mind.
The reason for the switch is that, frankly, there's a lot to talk about. VeggieTales is coming to NBC this Fall, and me and the jellies are rowing the boat. "What?" you say, "How could this be?" Let me explain. None of the major networks want to be in the kids business anymore. There just isn't any money in it, since Nickelodeon, The Disney Channel and Cartoon Network pretty much took over the world. But the FCC requires every TV station to air 3 hours per week of educational kids programming. So to fulfill that requirement, the networks have been more or less selling their Saturday morning blocks to production partners who can supply the programming. For the last few years, Discovery Kids has supplied NBC's Saturday morning block. No more. A few weeks ago it was announced that three kids producers – Classic Media (VeggieTales, Lassie), Scholastic (Clifford, all those book fairs) and Corus (Babar, Franklin) were forming a joint venture to supply kids programming to NBC, Telemundo (owned by NBC), and Ion (formerly Pax, partly owned by NBC). It's all very complicated. Much too complicated for mortals like ourselves to understand.
The bottom line is, Classic Media is contributing VeggieTales to the block, so VeggieTales will be on NBC this Fall! The trick is, the schedule left very little time to take the VeggieTales library and somehow come up with 13 half-hour episodes for television. So Classic and Big Idea asked me to do that part, and I enlisted my Jellyfish buddies to help (as well as some old Big Idea Productions friends). Together, we've had a whole lot of fun creating a new hosting concept for the shows, including a new TV theme song and some wacky running jokes and gags. Instead of the kitchen counter top, we now go over to Bob's house. Larry joins in, and several of Bob's 'neighbors' (including Mr. Lunt, Archibald and Pa Grape), show up uninvited to bask in the glow of real TV exposure. Everyone knows they're on TV, so they're all doing their best to get the attention of… well, whomever. Simon Cowell, I think. Of course, as is always the case, results are mixed, but rather silly.
"So, Phil, will they actually let you talk about God on NBC?" Oh, good question. I figured you'd get to that at some point. The answer is… yes and no. At first we were told everything was 'okay' except the Bible verse at the end. Frankly, that news really surprised me, because, heck, we're talking about NBC here. God on Saturday morning? It didn't seem likely. Since we've started actually producing the episodes, though, NBC has gotten a little more restrictive. (I think they actually sat down and started watching a few VeggieTales videos. "Hey wait – these are religious.") So it's gotten trickier, and we're having to do a little more editing. More than I'm comfortable with? Frankly, yes. But I had already committed to helping Big Idea with this, and I really didn't want to leave them in a tight spot. Plus, the new stuff we're coming up with is really fun, and at least some new kids will meet Bob and Larry on NBC, and maybe wander into Wal-Mart and buy a video with all the God still in. So it could be better, but overall it's not a total loss. The new stuff is really cute. You'll like it.
Plus, we've got a bunch of old Big Idea Productions friends working freelance on the new material, including Robert Ellis (Big Idea hire #2, for you historians in the crowd). All these guys were laid off when Big Idea fell apart, and it's great to see some veggie money going their way again. They're having fun, too.
So on September 9th at 10am EST, check out VeggieTales on NBC. You'll get to visit Bob's house, hear Jimmy Gourd sing a really annoying song, and see Archibald tell a very weird story. (Unless NBC pulls the plug before then, of course. Then you might be watching Lassie.) An hour later you can watch a 3-2-1 Penguins or Cartoon Adventures of Larryboy episode. All on NBC! Can you believe it? What a world we live in!
Can't wait to hear your reactions… feel free to post a comment below.
Phil
We’ll be watching – if we can’t see it we’ll record it!
Wow Phil !!
That sounds exciting!! I think my neice will want to see this.
-LjP
What wonderful news!
My family will be looking forward to seeing all the episodes.
I think that’s great news, Phil. It’s Saturday morning fun — just like you said in your catchphrase from days gone by. As for the Sunday morning values — I’m sure they’ll be there too. Maybe you could have some insider fun with Mr. Lunt reading “The Purpose Driven Life” or “Velvet Elvis” or something like that, too.
hey cool!
how great is that? I am actually looking forward to seeing the changes, I like to see some of the old stuff changed around a bit (I have always harbored a secret desire to see big Idea reanimate everything prior to “Dave and the Giant Pickle” with the original audio still intact, except for Larry’s voice in the first two, it’s to different, it is kinda creepy)
has any of this development made anyone wonder weather or not people will want to stop buying veggie tales videos and DVDs if they can see them on Saturday mornings for free? I imagine the Veggie core won’t stop buying them. although what the heck do I know about marketing and sales, about as much as I know about blogging and computers, hey wait a minute…
Go Veggies, Go! So to be clear – which episodes can we expect to see on NBC?
Seriously Phil, this is great news. If you need any more content you should check out Juniors Giants. Fun stuff there.
Love the new site format!
And veggies on TV, almost makes me want to buy one. Well, no, not really. But hopefully I’ll find a friend who’ll tape it for me.
Very very cool! Looking forward to checking it out, you know, with my daughter… 😉 Tell the gang to watch out…. aren’t peacocks vegetarians?
Phil,
This is awesome!! I am so excited to see Veggietales coming to every home in the USA via NBC. As you know I am passionate about Veggietales and I want to see all you guys succeed in reaching the kids of this planet for Christ.
Keep up the good work Phil.

Kidz On Earth
Hey Phil,
This sounds great. I hope many kids wander into Wal-mart to find their favorite Veggies on the shelves. I’ll be praying that those NBC people will change their minds and at least include the “God make you special, and loves you very much line.” Kids need to know that. Anyway, keep up the good work and God bless.
In His Service,
David Newton
How cool is this. Sarah and I are very excited for you and your old friends from Big Idea Productions!
Congrats!!! Will be counting down ’til Sept 9th.
Bryan
Praise God! Looking forward to it!
Oh I suspect NBC will back off on the “religious” schtick when their ratings start cleaning some clock. There’s a whole huge slice of the viewing public that’s been left out in the cold for decades now. I’m sure NBC will never stand for New Baptist Channel, but they might actually live up to their lefty-lib paeans to “diversity” for a change.
My family and I were very sad to hear about Big Idea but I saw Phil give a speech on DVD about it all and I agree with his central point, the best thing is to let God be God and make ourselves available. Great to hear you’re all doing well. God’s got “big ideas” too and looks like you’re getting in on ’em!
Great news!!
Phil,
That’s great news!
I am always glad when Christians are able to serve God with the craft God has blessed them with while breaking out of the “Christian community” bubble (but preferrably without having a watered down message).
Do I think it’s annoying that you don’t get to talk about God as much as the videos? Not really. What do you expect? If a business (or network) isn’t concerned with the things of God, they aren’t going to want you to produce it, either, but you knew this already. We can only hope and pray they continue to go through with it.
All in all, though, it is a great opportunity! Congratulations!
Hey Phil!
This is AWESOME! It’s a great entry into the television world, and there’s surely no better person to take the lead of that ship if it’s going to sail! Bon Voyage!
Hold tight to the power of prayer and hey….with God’s help, anything can happen, even on NBC! Yippee! My prayers are with you and all the other veggies out to NBCee, Cee, Cee.
(PS: There’s a typo in this article tho. Sorry….the editor in me couldn’t help but tell ya.)
Take good care and best of luck on this!
Cindy
We are so excited that God has provided this opportunity. My wife and I have been supporter of yours since the early stages of Veggietales. (We didn’t even have kids then…) Our children are 8 and 6 and they are huge fans. We will pray that this moves in the right direction that the Lord would have it to go and plan to sit as a family on the 9th and enjoy the show. (This will be a change since they cannot watch 1/2 of what is currently playing on Saturday mornings) Thank you Phil and Lisa for your commitment to God and to creating better programming for all of our children. God Bless you and your ministry. We are praying for you!

Hey! That’s fan-double-tastic! I can only hope that tons of kids will meet Bob and Larry on TV and, as you said, wander over to the local DVD aisle to buy a copy or two. At any rate, Bob and Larry are gonna be on NBC! How cool is that?
I’m sure we’ll see God working through this, no matter how stickler those NBC execs are. I hope Larry keeps a level head on national television, though! (Of course he’s Larry, so I don’t see how, in the end, he couldn’t.)
This is really bizzare! I was just thinking the other day: it is high time for Veggietales to hit Saturday morning TV! There are plenty of episodes. Too bad about all the editing, however I have long held to the philosophy of introducing the characters in the public school where I work, and letting the kids do the advertising to their parents at the video or retail store. I have never heard a complaint, and I have handed out stickers, coloring pages and booklets about Veggietales for several years now. God works in mysterious ways!
hi phil,
that is great news, hope to be able to buy the new stuff if and when it becomes available, have any ideas about selling the new veggie tales stuff on dvd. keep up the great work. john
Phil,
That’s awesome! Even though it will be toned down for NBC, it brings the veggies more exposure to the secular world. There are lots of people who never heard of Veggie Tales (believe it or not) so this is a great opportunity for outreach.
This is also a great opportunity for Jellyfish to branch out and bring the world some great messages.
My company is working on The Wooly Toons – cartoon sheep with varying colors, talents and abilities. They have a spiritual message but they are starting off with greeting cards, eBooks and educational materials. They will be animated in Flash for broadcast. If our company had the same opportunity for that kind of exposure (even toned down for network TV) we’d be all over it, because audiences can be introduced to more products afterward.
Congrats,
Allen Foreman

Right on Phil! I am sooo excited (for my kids, too!) that we can watch the VT Crew, but most importantly, as you said, a whole slew of other kids will be exposed to them!
I will be praying for this and so much more!
Wow this is awesome news, its great to see that God is using Classic to take Veggietales to be seen by more people, I will be praying that this all goes well and that many kids and parents will be touched by this. and 3-2-1 Penguins too, NBC will definately be the place to be on saturday mornings. But being in the UK I can’t see it, so I look forward to hearing more updates. This is exciting
Something good on tv again?! I’M SO EXCITED!!! Thanks.
Amazing !!!
The World needs to have more Veggies. I wish the Jellyfish gang the best of luck in their ventures.
Good luck Phil. Our family will be watching on Saturdays.
Thanks
Marc
Sweet! I’ve always wondered what the inside of Bob’s house would look like. But seriously, think about what Larry’s would look like. Can’t wait to watch Zidgel, Fidgel, Midgel and Kevin as well.
Congratulations on the new book! We’ll have to stop by B&N tomorrow and get a copy.
Anything that might make a child who has never seen the real VeggieTales want to check them out in their unwatered-down glory must be positive, though I wish that NBC were more open to allowing the faith messages to remain in the stories. I hope many more children come to know and love Bob, Larry, Junior and Mr. Lunt (yes, I said Mr. Lunt) through watching them on network TV. They’ve blessed our family since before we were parents.
Thank you, Mr. Vischer, for your continued commitment to bringing faith-filled, funny and fabulous entertainment to families. We’re looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Jellyfish Land and all your other endeavors.
I think it’s great! I really think kids who wouldn’t otherwise see Veggietales will get hooked, and end up getting exposed to all the UNEDITED videos!
Can’t wait to see these new shows….
Awesome! Glad to hear that something that teaches values and promotes good character for my kids to watch on a television network. Thanks Phil and NBC.
Awesome! I am setting my DVR as soon as it lets me, and I will pass the news on to my friend who does not have cable! I will also be praying for you all, and this veture. God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform, right?
Go Phil! Go Veggies! Go Phil! Go Veggies! It’s a pity those humorless blobs at NBC won’t let you do what made your work so cool in the first place- namely fun, overtly Christian work. They think they are broadening their audience by restricting you, but they are not. They are just making what their audience is interested in- well, less interesting.
Unless…….
When I was in the fourth grade, the Bible lady was no longer allowed to come to my school and give brief Bible lessons. (She used a flannel graph. “OOOOOOH! Flannel Graph!) How did the school teachers feel about it? I’ll give you a hint. That very year, during the class’ reading time, my teacher began reading “The Chronicles of Narnia.” Other teachers began reading “The Boxcar Children,” and so on. Hey, it was just fiction! What was the county administration going to do? But the teachers knew what was going on, and we, the students knew what was going on. Every day, as she got out her book, she smiled- and we smiled with her. I know you’re probably thinking about it anyway, so I’ll just egg you on: Get clever, Phil. Veggie Tales has gathered cultural steam. If you get on the air for a few episodes, see what you can talk about, a la “King George and the Ducky.” If you tell stories in which there are groups of people who seem to want to change reality by pretending that reality isn’t what it is, then what will they do? Censor your tone? And if said pretenders are ridiculous, then shouldn’t their, shall we say, “comedic potential” be milked for all it’s worth? Go for it, Mr. Vischer. The next time you put your pen to paper, I hope you hear a crowd chanting, “Go Phil, Go Phil, Go Phil!” Let them discover that they would have been better off with Veggie Tales overtly stating their case for Christ- because we’re deadly when we’re subversive. “Go Phil, Go Mike, Go Veggies, Go Bob, Go Larry…..”
That is so incredibly cool!! I can’t wait. I’ve always wondered where they live.. Hm.. Anyway. Unfortunately I have to work on Saturday mornings selling your videos haha… But I’ll tivo so it’ll be ok.. 🙂
Awesome news! My kids will finally have something to watch on Saturday mornings. It is amazing how God works.
Thanks Phil and others!

We’ve been waiting a long time for this! God’s going to use it in a HUGE way. Yippeee!!!!
Wow! I’m so excited, I’ll say it backwards–Wow!
We are telling all our friends and getting our VCR’s ready. Glad for the good news and for all of you who are close to our crispers!

That is great news! It is terrific to hear (read) the excitement in your voice (words) and hurray for the opportunity to get some of your fellow veggies back! I hope this will be a chance to help the public at large understand that a healthy diet includes lots of veggies.
My family and I will pray that God will use this as an opportunity to teach “Sunday Morning Values” to kids and parents alike and that it will open the door to people who might not otherwise consider the author of humor, values and life.
You Go Man!
Phil,
What great timing! As we prepare to leave for China next month to bring home our new 1 year old daughter, you bring VeggieTales to the little screen to give her something to watch on Saturday mornings. Although, it will be strange hearing anything other than the original theme song introducing a Veggie segment. I just can’t imagine Larry blowing Tuba to any other song! But I am looking forward to it and the whole family will be gathered ’round the TV on SEP 9. And I’ll be sure to plug God in at all the right spots where NBC left him out. Remember, God made you special and He loves you very much.
One last question: Since you are sorta doing Big Idea and Jellyfishland now, when you have spare time do you “Veg” or do you “Jell”? Inquiring minds want to know…
So excited to see you on NETWORK TV! I, too, am disappointed that God “had to go,” but hey, it’s a start! My 19 month old will be sad that the theme song has changed, as he has it memorized! He was disappointed when it wasn’t at the onset of Jonah!
Regardless, my kids and I will be watching on the 9th! As well has anyone else I can drum up!
Phil,
Praise God! I am so excited for you!!!! God is with you and he has a purpose for you.
I believe that we can draw a parallel here between you and Abraham. Abraham believed that God was to be obeyed no matter what. When he was asked to offer up his son, his only son Isaac, he didn’t hesitate or question even though he realized he was offering up everything because the blessing was to be “in Isaac”
(”in Isaac shall your seed be blessed”).
But Abraham’s hope and confidence wasn’t in the blessing, it was in the character of God almighty and his confidence was in him. He knew what God had promised and held on to it. This is why he concluded that God would raise him from the dead if he needed to and didn’t waiver.
I know that you have been though hell over the past few years. I know that you have had to learn how to endure the many opinions, humiliations and judgments put forth about you and the loss of everything that you had built and hoped to build and then the decision that brought it all on was reversed. I know that the loss was permanent even though the decision was reversed for at least a moral victory
I believe that as Christians we must all go through what I call the “Job experience” where we are shaken to the core and far beyond our own ability to deal with things and so we must yield because we are overwhelmed and brought to our knees. This is what scripture means by “tribulation works patience and patience, experience and experience, hope and hope makes us unashamed because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts”.
We run the race of long trials different than short ones but the long ones make us reliant upon the Lord and strengthen his character in us.
May Jesus richly return to you all that has been stolen and more. May he bless all that you do to overflow. May he reach the world of Children through you as you live in him and he in you.
Love,
Terry and family
I’ll definitely be up and early on Saturday morning to watch Bob and Larry on NBC. I’m so excited I’ll definitely be eating all my veggies from now on. Ummmm… I mean, my three kids will be up and early to watch Bob and Larry. They’re so excited that, uh, they’ve agreed not to be picky eaters any more and finish all their veggies.
Uhhhh, can you folks over at film editing take out the first part about me, a 38-year-old man, looking forward to seeing Bob and Larry. It’s kinda like talking about God on NBC.
I absolutely can not wait!!!!!!!!!!
How did I not know about this earlier!?! Well… I guess that’s a good thing, because now I only have a countdown of 12 days!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I guess that long of a wait is still manageable… Well… maybe…
Really though, I have been such a fan of any Big Idea, and now I can’t get enough of Jellyfish! It will be so wonderful to have both “greats” on a major network – and on Saturday mornings, to boot!!!!!!!
Over the years I have sadly witnessed the decline of the classic Saturday Morning Cartoons. I believe many of today’s kids shows are becoming more and more indecent for kids to watch …and even grown-up kids, like myself, are offended by the content of these newer kids shows.
This new opportunity to share Sunday Morning Values, even if there is no actual mention of God, will have such an amazing impact on the viewers and their families! I think that sharing Godly Principles and Biblical Truths, through these new Saturday morning shows, is in fact, sharing God with the people who watch.
I will definitely keep this new (and so very exciting) venture in my prayers!
Thank you for doing what you do!
Big Kid – ShanBanan 🙂
This is the best news for Saturday AM television since the debut of the Krofft Supershow!
Its a shame the networks arn’t comfertable with the idea of a religious show on a saturday morning. I cant wait for this new version of veggies, and i hope they are of the quality of the classic veggies.
Woo-hoo! That is so exciting that VeggieTales is going to be on NBC. I’m already in the process of emailing all my friends. This is fantastic and I hope NBC does not pull the plug! Good luck to you Phil and the Jellyfish team.
Wow! I love the new format.
I cant wait for the NBC thing.
What a GREAT opportunity! It’ll be nice to see some good cartoons on Saturday morning once again. Have you watched that Discovery Kids block? ZZzzzzzzz I mean, I love the Croc Hunter and all, but not on Saturday morning. Who knows? Maybe this will teach the other networks a thing or two as VT becomes the new staple of pajama-clad, Lucky Charms filled Saturdays!
Hey Phil:
Great to hear that Larry and Bob are going to hit Television land. I hope they are as catchy as the traditional Veggie Tales Series were.
There is only one problem… I do not have Cable TV 🙁
Keep up the great work!
-Larry B
That’s great news!
It’s a tiny let down on the Christian restrictions, but yeah, maybe it’ll inspire more people to go out there and buy the other DVD’s ^_^! I’m sure it’ll inspire heaps of fans to get up early in the morning 😉
I want it in Australia!!
ah well, can’t have everything good at once!
Good luck!!
That’s awesome! We live overseas right now, but if VeggieTales is still on NBC when we eventually move back to the States, I’m sure we’ll be tuning in! !
I love that idea Phil. After all you been through with the veggies you are still that committed to them. We all love the veggies. I am so glad they are coming to tv. So what i am trying to say as well is congrats.
That’s floggin’ awesome. Who knows, maybe some Aussie TV will end up picking the show up, and we can be watching it down under? One can dream, surely.
Hey wow, and did I just supply Phil Vischer’s first comment ever? Man, I feel SO proud of myself!
Hooray! Big Idea money flowing for everyone! Send some my way.
this is very cool, and can only be the first step of returning Big Idea to its rightful owner: the vegetables of the world. Them, and the former people who owned it and worked on it.
how exciting!
Wow! What a truly marvelous opportunity. And, a magnificent answer to prayer. I have prayed faithfully every day for years for your efforts to reach and teach.
I am going to elist the prayer support of everyone I can contact to support this effort. The possibility of exposing a huge number of kids and their parents to the Veggies is awesome.
Thanks to Phil, Lisa, and the whole gang, for your faithfulness to the Lord Jesus Christ. How exciting that in your commitment to Him you can all have great fun at the same time.
Hi, Phil.
Like your new blog. Quite sleek looking. Unfortunately the new site means that the old articles are gone. 🙁 I was planning on re-reading the 11 part “Whatever happened to Big Idea” again sometime soon.
I’ll make sure the kids and I watch NBC in a couple of weeks when your program should be on. 🙂
I’ve been wondering for 13 years when VT would make it to television! 🙂 It’s great to hear of more general exposure for VeggieTales. (I did see “The Toy that Saved Christmas” on PBS last December, however.) Sorry to hear of the heavy editing. I was wondering what jf was up to!
BTW, I’m a new VeggieTales Moms consutant!
WONDERFUL! Hi, Phil. This is good news. Given time, God will do with the Veggies what is good in his eyes. I’m happy for you and that the Jellyfish are moving foreward. May the Lord continue to bless all your talents. Give our love to the family and all the friends working close with you.
Michael Spooner
Phil—
Congrats on the new book and new NBC deal. After we met, I got swamped with some projects and never got back to you. (And to be honest, I’m not sure I ever captured the scope of your project to the extent that you were envisioning it.) But I’m thrilled that things seem to be working out for you now.
If there’s ever anything I can do to help, please let me know. I promise not to be so slow to respond next time.
Please give my best to your mom as well.
Stan Campbell
That’s exciting! I’ve been waiting 13 years to see more VeggieTales on tv. 🙂 (I did catch “The Star of Christmas” on PBS last Dec.) Thanks for the update on what the jf team is doing.
YIPEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phil,
This is great news! Our family has been big VT fans since the beginning. Bummer about having to edit God out, but like you mentioned, it’s a great foothold to instilling some good morals into kids. I hope VT really takes off via this format and reaches lots of families that have not heard of VT.
Thanks for continuing to work hard to keep VT alive!
Regards,
The Statler Family
Happy to hear this. First reaction was, Now was that what God was after when Phil lost control of Veggie Tales ? I heard you speak at the conference and have much respect for you!!! I really
believe God has something much larger than Veggie Tales for you
and your family in the future.
Al Pals – cell 712 540 6496
Congratulations on helping push the veggies onto NBC.
It’s great that kids that have never heard of Bob and Larry will
get exposed to the Characters.
Blessings,
Jeff
Nice! I’ll be watching it September 9th! Wow, the part about what they’ll let you show is, frankly, better than I expected. I guess I’m still in shock that they let you air it in the first place. At any rate, I’ll be tuning in and hoping it stays.
Phil-
We can’t wait!! YAY!
We will be praying for all the kids to get their parents to watch too!
Dr. Phil,
Thanks for the update, I’m really interested to see where this all goes. But I was wondering… Where can I go to find your excellent story about the rise and fall of Veggie Tales. It seems like there are still several chapters to write…
ABOUT TIME there be something on Saturday morning that is worth watching again! Saturdays had become just as vulgar and grewsome as a movie on Friday nights. I am so releaved to see that God can find a way and yes even use secular stations to reach our kids!
PRAISE GOD!! May His mighty bless each of you in this new adventure big enough for even Larry Boy!
Wow!!! I run a puppet group at my church and we have had to do performances where we can’t talk about God… but you’d be surprised that when you show good Christian values people are interested in learning more. God’s blessings on this new venture.
Being a big fan of the Veggies and having worked the brand over the years, I think this is great. Regarding cutting God out of the programming, I’m not that opposed. When I first was exposed to Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith crossing over, I became a fan and bought their older CDs. I definitely was exposed to the Gospel. Those seeds helped to lead me to Christ a few years later. It’s one of the reasons I’m in Christian Entertainment today. Rock On Phil and the Veggies!
Eric
That is AWESOME NEWS, Phil. The only thing which could make it better is if it bumped The TellieTubbies off of Sunday morning on PBS…
God Bless you, sir,
Matt
Yes!!!! How exciting! Veggie Tales reach thousands of children every Saturday. Glad to hear it! I can’t wait to see it. The child in me in the college student body. Congrats on this and the book! Hope you have a good day.
Hi Phil,
Great news! It’s wonderful to hear that Veggie Tales is coming to Saturday Morning Cartoons. So many of the shows that currently fill that slot are horrendous in content and quality (but mostly the latter).
Yes, it stinks that you’ll have to edit out some of the more religious parts. . .but I can’t help feeling God will still be able to use the result to further his kingdom!
By the way, the new blog feature is the bomb! 🙂
Hey Phil!
VeggieTales on NBC?! I’m definately programming my VCR. I can’t wait to see them. I’ve always wondered where the veggies lived.
Congrats on the NBC opportunity! That’s awesome!
That is so exciting. I wrote it down on the family calendar so we don’t miss it.Veggietles are very close to my heat not only because of how perfect they are but because the whole Veggietales banktruptcy happened a year before we had a similar experience with our own business. We employed some church members in our business and when we had to close our doors we encountered a lot of well meaning christians who had the opinion that “if we were good christians we would not be going through that” , or that “Christians should not be filing for bankruptcy”, so I wanted to thank you for sharing you experience. It was vary helpful to know that we were not alone.
On a lighter note our three year old is now famous in his sunday school as the only child ever with a veggietale phobia. The teachers look at me like I am crazy when i warn them but it’s true…The rest of us absolutely love them and we ll be watching on Saturday…
So are you hiring animators again? I am almost out of Animation school.
Hehehe, am I the first to comment? Schveeet.
Was wondering when you’d put up this news Phil. ^^) Actually news about the NBC thing was up on the net couple months ago I do believe, but I didnt know you’d be fronting it with you jelly pals. Thats awesome! And explains why your too busy for emails now-a-days.
Kitchen scenes are the best part in my opinion, where’s Bob’s house? The Bread box? Or the Crisper in the fridge? LOL
Cant wait to see what you’ve been-a-brewin’ in lately. *smiley*
Wont watch the penguins and larry boy stuff though, sorry. Kinda swore away from it since they either sucked, or started to suck, really sorry.
Talk to you later,
Lydia
ps. LOVE THE BLOGGER STUUUUUFFF!
I think its great for VeggieTales to be getting saturday morning exposure. I think that there is no way to remove the “God” aspects completely. The messages are pure and true. There is only one source for that. Congrats and good luck
When I first heard about this exciting news, I was sad (not surprised) that NBC didn’t want the God stuff in the series. But you know, I grew up with Fred Rogers. I didn’t know he was an ordained minister at that time, but his message was one of kindness, and love, and frendship. It was, in esence Biblical ! It might be a message that the world needs to hear, that Christians are actually kind, and loving ( we hope )and love our friends because that’s what Jesus wants us to do. By the time they fall in love with Bob and Larry, and go to Walmart and buy that Veggie video, they might be ready to hear that God made them and loves them and wants a relationship with them. Here’s to those seeds falling on fertile ground!
Best of luck! God Bless!

Wow, finally Sunday morning values on Saturday morning. But dont stop there Phil… The Veggies also belong on prime time up against the Sopranos and the O.C., and late night against Hoawrd Stern. You can do it!
My kid’s teenage babysitter’s only knowledge of God comes from the episodes of Veggietales they watched with them. You dont have to use the word God to preach God’s words, Saint Francis said “preach the Gospel always, if necessary use words” and I’m sure you will. And win a bunch of Emmys while your at it, and clean up this Godless town! Bishop Fulton Sheen won an Emmy and you should too. Phil for mayor… Phil for governor… Phil for president… Phil for king! (BTW my demo reel is on the way soon).
Mark G
Awesome! We are huge fans of the Veggies and always look forward to anything new from them.
Congrats and God bless as you continue to influence kids here in the States. By the way, a few years back, I had started creating a board game based on the Book of Daniel with the hopes that you (former) Big Idea folks might be interested in it.
It still needs lots of work, but do you have any suggestions for me on how to get it marketed?
Looks like you could end up a Christian Michael Eisner after all!
Seriously, tho, that’s very good news. My wife and I, and probably even our kids, will be tuning in.
AWESOME! It’s amazing how God is getting back into the middle of society again. Even though He was pushed out for years, He is starting to soften hearts and make His presence known again. SO EXCITING!!!
thats AWESOME!! God is so good. It goes to show to once again that there is no reason to doubt when you can have faith. My son and I will be watching=)
Phil! WOW!!!!! I am so thankful that God sure knew what he was doing when we all just sat around and scratched our heads wondering “What happened”? I knew God had some kind of greater plans for you, VeggieTales and Big Idea . . . we just didn’t know what and when it would happen.
Congrats!! We’re behind you all the way. I am glad that my 2 year old son (Micah) and my daughter (Sienna – due any day now) will have Veggies on Saturday morning to start off their weeekend.
Angelica
P.S. I look forward to getting your new book too!
Can’t wait to hear “Your deity made you special, and he/she/it likes you very much!”
Dear Phil,
I just wanted to leave you a note to say that I found your story (so far) very comforting. I started my own business last year and feel very overwhelmed but I know with God’s guidance everything will become what it becomes. It’s just hard knowing what to do sometimes. The Veggies are wonderful but they are wonderful because of the gifts that God has given to you. God bless you and what ever adventure you have next.
Sincerely,
Keshia
When I read about this fantastic news last night in the VeggieGram, you should have seen how giddy I was. I mean, ridiculously so. I’m 26 and a mom of 2 little boys. While one is only a month old, the other is a huge Veggie fan. I’m thrilled that we’ll be able to give our DVD player a break on Saturday mornings now — just ask all of the people I’ve already spread the great news to!
Julie
Wow! I can remember you saying before that one of your original ideas with 3-2-1 Penguins and Larryboy 2D was to have a Saturday Morning block before, and it seems almost surreal to be able to have that chance now!
I’m really happy for you all!
Great Job!
Very neat! It’s exciting to know that these vegetables will be on something as large as NBC… maestro!
Yeah! We are thrilled to hear there will actually be something on network tv that is kid-appropriate! And we’re glad to know that you will be involved!
Congrats, Phil! I have always admired the brilliance in your writing. I’m glad to see you will have an opportunity to continue creating under the Veggie name.
Will the Silly songs get an opportunity to play? I sure hope so. NBC shouldn’t complain about them since they are not really religeous, and I think they show some of your greatest creativity. ‘The Yodelling Veterinarian of the Alps’ is still my all-time favorite. Keep up the good work, and God bless you and your team!
Yeah!!! That is so awsome! Can’t wait. My brothers and sister will love it! So will my mom and dad, and me! Way to go Mr.Vischer! Thank you God!
This is so awesome! My family has loved VT for over 6 years, we are so glad you are now going to be on TV, way to go guys! We will definitely be watching, and I plan to spread the word to all my friends at church… you wouldn’t happen to have a flyer I could print and pass out would you?
Thank GOD our beloved Veggie Tales & friends will be on NBC!
This is truly a big moment for Veggies all over the world.
😀
I’m so happy for you and can’t wait to see my kids turn on the tv on saturday instead of putting in a video. My 4 yr old son, Alex loves bob and larry and my 8month old daughter Stepanie is starting to enjoy it also. Can’t wait to see the new episodes. Will you eventually put it on DVD so that my kids can enjoy the new episodes anytime. This is so exciting I will be spreading the good news with my friends and family. God bless and continue the good work with children and adults too.
P.S. Alex has been through several surgeries and Bob and Larry has been with him every step of the way. Thank you
I’m fairly new to Veggies tales through my soon to be 4 year old grandson. He truly loves LarryBoy and I think believes he is Larryboy. I’m helping plan his 4 year Birthday Party Sept. 30 – being a Nanna that wants to help make dreams come true, thought Hiring LarryBoy to appear would be a wonderful birthday experience for him and his friends. However, doing so much internet research found the costume company and the same co.that books LarryBoy/Veggie tales told me that that would be impossible—
I never believe anything is impossible.
How can I make this happen? We are one Christian Family who can help reach out to many others not by National TV but Family to Family.
This is awesome!!! My one year old son has loved VeggieTales since he was old enough to see color. I have my whole family searching cross country..no joke….. in search of new veggie movies, cds, toys …..any thing. WE CANT WAIT BRING ON THE VEGGIES
It`s great what God does. I`ll be praying for you and the new projects!
I am excited for your opportunity to be on NBC. I think that kids will walk into Walmart and pick up those unedited videos. And even providing good, wholesome, entertainment is a great step in the right direction.
Phil,
Great news about Saturday morning TV. I will definitly TIVO the programs for Meg and Heidi to watch here at Grandpa and Grandma’s house.
They love Larry and Bob and all their Veggie Tale friends. We’ve been supportive of Big Idea from day 1. It’s been quite a ride from those days in the loft.
Continued blessings on you and everyone involved in keeping the message out there.
Gerry
That’s so awesome! Wish I still had cable…… well… maybe not…
Marking calendar now!! Setting VCR when I get home from work!
I was ecstatic when I got the VeggieGram about VeggieTales on NBC, and I’m even more thrilled that you’ll be involved in it, Phil! Although, I’m still getting used to you refering to Big Idea as “they.” But I’m getting off-topic….
It all sounds great! I can’t wait to see it! ^^
And by the way, I love the new blog format. Good luck reading all these comments. =D
That’s awesome, we can’t wait to watch!
I read your comments as well as the comments on the Big Idea website. Definitely exciting! We don’t have kids, but we still own almost every Veggie DVD. I am not surprised NBC wants to tone down the “religious stuff” (NBC=No Broadcasting Christianity?). But hey, if kids learn some of the lessons the Bible teaches about love, kindness, and mercy, I’m definitely cool with that! I’ll be sitting in front of the tube with my bowl of Cocoa Puffs to watch, like the good ol’ days! lol
Bro, that rules. I’ll be praying that it all work out.
Hi All,
Thankfully, Cable isn’t necessary – you just need a good antenna to get network TV 🙂 (For those in Australia, though, it would have to be ONE BIG ANTENNA!)
And Phil, Dear Phil,
I’m thankful for God’s wisdom and that He’s never out of surprises.
Four years ago, had you told me that you were going to put VT on TV, sans an overt message about God, I would have been bitterly disappointed. Just two weeks ago I was utterly clueless that the company had even changed hands! So I have to “catch up” on this!
I’m still kinda “grieving the loss” (and yes, I actually cried over this as recently as 10 minutes ago) but it’s clear that something interesting is afoot. And since God is sovereign, I will trust it’s something good.
Is He tame? Is He safe? (No and no.) But He is Good.
In other words Phil, Aslan IS on the move. (NOW I get it.)
Blessings,
Helen Martin
how exciting, America will finally meet the awesome funny, singing, dancing God Fearing veggies. they are my absolute favorite.our family will be watching on saturday morning. thank you for giving us the best christian kids videos ever created. God Bless Big Idea.
I’m so glad VeggieTales is coming to television. My daughter loves Larry Boy, and brakes out into Veggie songs everywhere. I’m truely sorry that Big Idea did not stay afloat- but look what it started. I know good thing will happen for all the “Veggies”. PJ is really happy to see a new Larry Boy and love the new theme song. We are counting the days til Sep. 9. God Bless-
Timi
Very good news. I hope that in time, they become less restrictive (“God” is such a sceeery word! but cussin’s ok…) and they let you all whisper a few Bible verses now and again.
Hi Phil,
I want to second what Terry Smith said in response #40. I’m so glad to hear that in all things God is working for your good, you who are called according to His purpose.
BTW, if NBC gets too persnickety about “religious content”, you might want to remind them of a somewhat obscure program that managed to last 7 years (I think) with some great ratings. You might remember “Touched By An Angel”? 😉
John LaCasella
You guys need to watch a movie called “Time Changer.” http://www.timechangermovie.com/ The basic premise is that goodness without gospel is more corrupting than wholesale filth because it is what eventually leads to wholesale filth.
THIS IS AWESOME!!!
THIS IS AWESOME!!! OUR PRAYERS ARE WITH YOU!!!!
Well, I get to be the wet towel thrown on the comments section.
Is compromise good? We’ve noticed that veggies has changed. Even Lord of the Beans was just a feeder video to get kids to Lord of the Rings, later. Sorry, we’re not going to the rings, potter, the matrix, narnia or any other film that uses “good and evil” themes but without real TRUTH….ie.. Christ………..I know, I know, I’ve been slammed incessantly about avoiding narnia but too much occultic imagery for our kids. Ain’t even gonna go there. The compromise for the Sat. morning deal is no different than churches getting rid of any mention of the blood of CHrist…mention of sin…..replacing the gospel with a social plan to take over the world (in the name of God) when the power of the gospel is stripped. The power comes from repentence….(gasp). NO………it’s all about having fun and coffee bars and skate parks and reaching the lost with illusionists and comedians and blah blah blah….Jesus is NOT my CEO and who cares about anything that Forbes magazine has to say. But that is what is in our churches…and boy oh boy are they GROWING. (like a really big corporation..oh goodie…)…we’re all super spiritual now coz we have 10,000 members Huh? If the road is NARROW that means not many are on it….but our churches are LOADED because of the feel-good programs and messages…not because anyone is picking up their CROSS. So if these churches are LOADED and we look SO MUCH like the world…could it be we’re all on the road to destruction..and just don’t know it ?
satan is sly and cunning….the same twisting of the truth he handed Eve is the same bag of goods he is handing the American church. With the success of Veggie Tales..and for that matter Touched By an Angel….where the message was right there……could you not have taken a stand and said…no….the message must remain…for that is the essence of Veggie Tales….and let them reject you if need be. Truth becomes apostate, eventually, because of COMPROMISE.
This is a really good thing.
T.J.,
Understand your point. The gospel is not in the “feel good” mentality that so many people have placed in the pulpits and in the pews. However, may I humbly ask you a question? Why did you post? Was it to show love to your brother in Christ? To support him in what he is trying to accomplish? Or did you post in an effort to criticize? Please don’t be angry at my question. I only want you to search your own heart. Because great harm can be created by any of us standing in judgment over another in such a way that we stir up strife and sow discord among the brethren. Please remember the others that read what you post will be motivated to respond, and the devil could easily have a field day with the emotions that could be stirred because of a few words. Even though you have a valid point, don’t let yourself become an instrument of strife.
Mr. Vischer has been given an assignment by the parent company, Classic Media, to help Big Idea be a part of this joint venture, and he’s trying to make sure that what Big Idea puts out on TV will be as full of the gospel as NBC is willing to allow. Remember, the Bible says in Col 3:22-24: “Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” NBC may not be committing this work to the Lord, Classic Media may not be committing this work to the Lord, but you can rest assured that Phil Vischer is committing this work to the Lord. And he does it for one reason only: the passion he has to serve God with all his heart, in whatever task is set before him. What we need to do is pray, pray, pray. You never know, perhaps God will allow Mr. Vischer a “Nehemiah” situation (Nehemiah 2:2-6), where he is before the “king” at NBC (whoever that might be), and this person asks “You seem troubled. What’s the matter?” Then of course, Mr. Vischer would have the opportunity to speak forth the desire that God has for the truth of the gospel to be included in the shows that are aired on TV. And God could easily turn that king’s heart to say, “I see your point. Go, and rebuild the “wall.” Make the shows whatever they need to be. And I’ll make sure you have whatever you need to get it accomplished.” That’s what we need to be focusing on: prayer that as Mr. Vischer is before these kings, God will grant him FAVOR, so that he can accomplish what God desires.
God bless you as you pray, T.J.
We’ll be watching on the i network on Sky Angel satellite. Veggietales, Penguins and LarryBoy will be in good company with all the other great clean kids shows we get through Sky Angel!
Thanks cookie lady…I’m not mad that you responded to my post. yes, others will read it. But we must obviously look around at the American church and see it has some “entertainment issues”. Mr. Vischer has a great opportunity to reach the lost..but again….if the mesage is WATERED DOWN…..you’re letting the lost see something that is dazzzling to their eyes…but the message of God is toned down. That’s what was so awesome about the Jonah movie…up on the big screen….the MESSAGE OF GOD…and it was not re-written to placate a secular audience.
Our family has struggled immensely going from church to church trying to find where we fit. It seems like it’s really all about FUN…and not much about JESUS, REPENTENCE, CHANGE…(of the old man…to the new man…walking in holiness)
Have our churches become nothing more than social clubs? Has even CHristian entertainment been toned down to be politically correct? I pray that some little kid watching on Saturday morning will get the message of God’s love . We do a grave disservice when we keep the lost from hearing the true message so we can dress it up and sell it to executives who mainly care about money…not a person’s soul.
Re. The Book
Since there’s no blog post specifically about Sidney & Norman yet, I just wanted to pop on here to say how much we are enjoying the book. It’s a sweet tale, and (I admit it) I cry when I read it — especially the part when Sidney has his meeting on 77 Elm Street. I took it to my Sunday School class last week, and read it to the children during the time between “regularly scheduled programming” and parental pick-up. The parents who listened in were really impressed, and several took the name of the book down. It’s funny how everyone knows “VeggieTales,” but no one connected author “Phil Vischer” with them. I hope you sell about 2 billion copies.
It’s amazing that NBC, which is supposed to focus on producing programming “in the public interest” should be so at sea when it comes to programming that relates at all to religion. You really have to wonder what the lives are like of the people over there – we sort of feel sorry for them.
Well, I guess half a loaf is better than nothing, but our kids will stay with the shows we got at Walmart, for now anyway.
Maybe we should write to the network and ask them not to make any editing changes?
Thanks!! (from all of us here)
I think you all are selling out & should be ashamed of yourselves!! Veggie Tales is a religious show, NBC is notoriously anti-religion yet instead of insisiting NBC rise up to the level of God you drug your show down to the level of NBC. I’m not sure if this was done for publicity or for money but no reason is ever good enough to turn your back on God! Boo to whomever was involved in the shredding of Veggie Tales, my children will not be watching this & I’m am encouraging all my friends & family to not support this programming either!
Per Brent Bozell’s column on Human Events, NBC is editing God out of your program. How can you stand by and let that happen?
oh gosh! come on, let’s review: mel gibson’s “Passion of the Christ”—an EXPLICITLY Christian Catholic film, mind you–was released by Icon productions and the DVD marketed by Fox! last year, Disney and Walden Media released Narnia (once again, Christian themes!) in theaters. And the story in this year’s “Superman Returns” blatantly reflects Christ’s life (somewhat), , resurrection and ascention into the “sky”. this same film also talks about a need for a Savior. while some people may not have caught the clear Christian themes in Narnia, it was still a big hit! VeggieTales WITH the “God stuff” is a big hit! So why don’t they want a little bible verse and some good Christian values in a “kid’s” show on TV?? serious bummer, but at least people should like it. i’m a teenager, and i know i still do!
What an AMAZING opportunity this is!! Don’t be discouraged by those who call it ‘watering down’, ‘turning your back on God??!!! LOL’! It’s taking an unprecedented opportunity and getting out there with Biblical concepts that kids have NEVER heard before. God will give you creativity with weaving in the message. It’s getting quality instead of garbage out there. We shouldn’t be ‘preaching’, but we do need to be ‘out there’. It’s being a light where you are, using the giftings God has given you. God can open amazing doors and relationships from this – perhaps tv and magazine interviews where you can explain where Veggietales came from, and sales of videos to pre-Christians, not just to those who already know Christ. They will know we are Christians by our love (for each other) – not our condemnation of each other. The world can’t stand our bickering and self righteousness (and thus they reject our God!) Let’s show NBC there’s a demand for quality kids stuff. Let’s be encouraging!! And let’s love the kids out there like Jesus would! Go Phil!
VeggieTales IS about God but there is still much more to be learned for kids in these Sat. morn versions.
There are values and morals taught in each and every episode. These are things we want kids to learn and it can be taught even in an edited down version.
Having these values and morals are God Given Gifts and like in Lord of the Beans, we must use our giftss wisely.
If you can get a child to start singing silly songs instead of rap music then you have made great progress. A child seeing this on tv in any form is only going to gain something positive. Watered down or more the message is still there! So much better than what is on right now.
Kudos to Phil!
And I can say as a brand new VeggieTales Mom (home party business). There are parents and kids who have never heard of VeggieTales. When you offer this to them, they will seek it out in the store. Then they will see the whole message. WE don’t know what changes can be made by this intrduction. But they are sure to be positive AND may last a life time.
We will be watching here in our house!
When Jay Jay the Jet Plane was secularized, it lost all of its appeal. How can you talk about values when you can’t reference the source of your values? I think you are dooming Veggie Tales by compromising. I hope it won’t be so but the history is not good.
Phil,
I find your comments offensive. Editing God out of videos? That’s OK because I was already comitted to the project. Wow, talk about taking a stand for your faith. I think Jesus had something to say about those who would deny him.
Your videos are a blight on Christianity anyway so it is actually better that you do edit out the so-called religious aspects of the videos anyway.
I, too, am disappointed that God “had to go,” but hey, it’s a start!
Is it really though? Yes, perhaps some of the kids will pick up some of the older shows at Walmart, and yay for those kids. But what about the kids that are unable to do this for various reasons? How would they ever know VT is a Christian show? They wouldn’t.
How is this a start? It isn’t as if NBC will wake up one day and say, “Well, gee guys, I think you should start talking about God in your shows again.” A compromise has been made, NBC knows that BI is willing to compromise so I don’t see this as a start by in large. Yes, maybe some kids will pick up the older videos, but even if they do what does this say about our stance on the importance of God’s Word? He was good enough when we were only on the shelves of local stores, but now that we’ve got a network to carry us it is time to ditch His Word. That isn’t going to speak well, in terms of consistancy, to the world or to our children.
I liveblogged the first episode — sorry to say, I didn’t know it was Phil behind the scenes, so to speak, so I was a little more critical than I might have been after reading this article. Anyway, on-the-spot review at my place.
This may be a challange but a hugh step forward. STICK TO YOUR BELIEFS! My family missed the show this morning because we did not know times, but my kids were so excited it was going to be on TV. We will be watching for future shows. They rarely watch anything because of the “jokes and gestures” that are inappropriate in cartoons. We stick to videos mostly. What a sham. So keep up the good work and we will be supporting!
Millions have accepted GOD; there are more out there to reach!
* after reading the above post, STICK TO YOUR BELIEFS!
I watched the 3-2-1-Penguins! show on NBC this morning and was stunned to find that NBC was letting it in. For those concerned with the watered-down message: My kid wasn’t reading the unabridged KJV Bible this morning, he was watching “Xio Lin Showdown” and “Jonny Quest”. The funny and touching half-hour Penguins show (that ended in watching two children kneel in Prayer!) was a gentle reminder that God listens to his children. I am glad that this became and option and will tune in EVERY Saturday.
My kids are thankful at church and excited to see Veggie Tales on Saturday mornings. I do have a curious question. I have been told that you or someone from your team is originally from my area in Michigan and I was wondering if that is true. Please let me know I would be interested. Pastor Neil/children’s Pastor/Bethany Assembly of God/Adrian
Please remember that Big Idea is now under the jurisdiction of Classic Media and not Phil, although he is helping with this and other projects. They all have the best interest of children (and others) at heart, but NBC is the final one to call the shots here. I would think the best approach would be to PRAY for NBC to turn around because of the spirit of humility and true courage of Jesus they witness in these people. I emailed the network to congratulate them on including Veggietales in their lineup without preaching at them. Maybe a few more could write a note or two and mention that it would be nice to see the Veggietales they are used to, which DO mention that God made everyone special, etc. Even NBC could listen if they don’t get the usual rhetoric of “Christians” threatening to boycott at the drop of hat, etc. which normally only defeats the purpose and makes us appear fanatical.
Tell NBC to go jump in a lake. Veggie Tales with God or forget it.
I cannot tell you how totally excited this makes me. I have 4 children who own (ithink) every veggie tales. I love the diversity. My oldest is almost 9 and youngest is 2. Thanks for doing what you do. Going to NBC is awesome! what can I do to show support (besides watch it cause that we will) Thanks you so much God bless this new venture. Yvette
Before some of you get angry, about this, did it ever occur to you that these wonderful people took it to God first and maybe they prayed hard about it. TV is a very dark place, and I might add, some Christians watch regular channels all the time, maybe even some who protest this. God will use this, to reach the lost. People who watch TV need God too, and God may use this to open their eyes. It is not our decision on how Gods will save His people. It is His.
Good Luck my Veggie Tale friends! Our prayers are with you .
Watched La Mancha on Saturday morning and LOVED it!!! If I were a kid, I would certainly want my mom to buy me some Bob and Larry DVDs!!
I loved how you had Bob and Larry talk about an issue that kids really deal with!
I will be spreading the word about Veggie Tales on Saturday morning!
Kathryn, hey, it doesn’t matter if you’re a kid or not, I just turned 15, am the youngest in my family and watch the veggie movies all the time!! Go out and buy a few!
I have ignored Veggie Tales until I got married and had a child. She is 3 years old and she loves to watch the episodes on VHS. There is nothing like it and They are perfect as they are, with God and the bible verse at the end. I am deeply dissapointed with NBC for ripping it apart (they might as well change the title to Bland Veggies), but mostly disappointed with the people who let NBC do that and gave in. Veggie Tales don’t need NBC and NBC has plainly said they don’t need God. So why the compromise? Someday, Veggie Tales will get lost in the in this web of godless world and it won’t be because NBC aired it. It will be because of us who thought, “well, maybe showing it on TV without a God will reach them out for Christ”!
Phil, I am dissappointed about the editing. I think that i a bit ridiculous. Our world is in a state that we should not be removing God and scripture from our lives.
I do look forward to the programing though, it will be a nice addition for my children. YES, i will still be heading to walmart to purchase the real deal!!
Thanks for all you do!
I think this is great! Not only is VeggieTales FINALLY airing on television, but Big Idea also launched their new direct marketing opportunity with the VeggieTales and 3-2-1 Penguins lines this month. It’s so much easier to locate the VeggieTales products this way (some toys have just been impossible to find)!
I’ve recently joined as one of the new consultants for VeggieTales Moms and I can’t wait to tell even more people about this great show!
I really wish you hadn’t given in to NBC’s request to “water down” Veggie Tales. I think it sends a message to my child that you should give in to a big bully. Frankly, Phil, I think you let your committment to other people overshadow your committment to God. You didn’t want to let your friends down, but did you let God down? Maybe some children will ‘wander into Wal Mart” and get the REAL Veggie Tales. But for those that don’t, all they got on Saturday morning was more television.
Phil
Can’t help but think of the song, “Stand Up for What You Believe In,” as quoted by a young friend of ours. If NBC can slam Christianity by letting Madonna hang from a cruxifix, why can’t they let Veggie Tales mention God?
Wish we got more than one channel here. I woud check it out if I could. No ABC, NBS, CBS or Fox, just ctn and I have yet to watch it. close as I can figure it was 7 years ago fox left and there wasn’t any thing they had we would watch. There was only Tim the Tool man Taylor we watched when it was and ABC affiliate, some time before that. After 6 years with out T.V. I am not sure I ever will want it back. I used to think whenthe children grow up but i am not sure of that now.
I think it is great that you have this opportunity.
What I don’t think is great is that you seem to be compromising you Godly Values. The Bible tells us to not be blown and tossed by the wind. It would seem that you are indeed being blown and tossed. I understand contracts but based on what you stated in your blog the original agreement did not include “SELLING OUT GOD”. You need to be strong and stand up to that. If your mission with Veggie Tales is truly to glorify God, don’t you think he can handle this situation? I see this as a testing from the Lord to see if you really will stand in the gap for him and not compromise his Word. Personally, if this goes through I would have to stop purchasing your products or using them for the children’s ministry that I am committed too.
In Christ Service,
Gail Bliss
I just learned from Focus on the Family-Citizen Linc that NBC has asked you to pull all the spiritual content from your program, rather than just the end scripture. I hope you do NOT! While the exposure would be nice, all you would end up exposing kids to is God-free cartoons, similar to what they can get any day on any channel. I am sure you have the best motives in mind, but, nevertheless, I hope you don’t compromise. You built your “kingdom” on God honoring content, why abandon the very principles that made you successful? 2 Corinthians 6:14-18.
I’m delighted to learn the Veggie Tales will be on regular t.v….I’m a mom to 7 daughters & we all LOVE the Veggie Tales very much! I am however very concerned to hear that the network is going to edit out any reference to God? Censorship of a cartoon? How can you do that? Veggie Tales won’t be the same! I’m so disappointed that so many children aren’t going to be able to enjoy this wonderful series the way it was intended.
Ezekiel 28:16 states of Satan ..through the abundance of commerce (or multitude of trade)you were filled with lawlessness and violence and you sinned…… please dont sell out Bob and Larry! If you were deceived may Jesus forgive you but the marketing machine has once again shown its true colors.Run to God
I’m saddened to hear that you sold out Bob & Larry to NBC. You started out with a purpose – and that was to reach children at their level. But, it seems to me that the idea of going mainstream and making more money has distorted your original vision. What is your purpose now? God should never be compromised. The lesson you have just taught children/teens/adults – ’cause every age group loved the VeggieTales, is that when the pressure gets too great, just give in. Or better yet, Stand Up For God, Until it gets too hard. I will no longer be using Veggie Tales in my Children’s Ministry.
Nancy, instead of trying to make a point that you’re right and Phil is wrong, how about looking at it from the perspective that MILLIONS of unchurched kids and adults are going to be watching this show on Saturday mornings. The kids that dig the show will want the DVDs, the parents will buy them the DVDs, they’ll get the full uncensored version about how great God is, and then, God willing, they’ll eventually come to your church where…
Oh, darn it, you guys took VeggieTales out of your children’s ministry? Oh, you don’t want us coming here? Oh well, look at the time, we’d better get home so we don’t miss the football game. Sorry we bothered you church people…
Intolerance like this is a hindrance to the work of the Lord and a stumbling block to the unsaved. Would you rather be right or would you rather lead people to Jesus?
I agree with both TJ and Cookie Lady! Is that possible? God knows what lays in the hearts of men. Ultimately, we are all accountable for OURSELVES. Maybe it is up to us Christians to pull out from what may be missing from the Saturday morning version and expound on it to our children, friends and neighbors with the message of Christ. I think we all have a responsibility to pray over this and for Phil, his family and company and of course NBC. This is a great stepping stone for people who know nothing about God. I agree with what I heard someone mention, “It has got to be better than all the OTHER junk on tv!!!” Phil-Godspeed and continue pressing on, we love you. Haven’t seen it yet, just heard about all this yesterday on a local radio talk show!! See..the message is spreading…even if people are talking about controversy, God will ultimately come into conversation.
Personally I find myself saddened by the news that Veggie Tales is for all intensive purposes being censored. I realize that in this day of the “politically correct” lets not offend anyone, that “censorship” is as unpleasant a word as many with only four letters. Veggie Tales has always been a wonderful tool for teaching our littlest “babies” the bible and the joy on the face of a smaill child listening to the “bunny song” or one of the other great classics has always brought a smile to my face. We teach our children to be “Strong in the Lord”, He is our shield and salvation. What does it say when Veggie Tales gives up without a fight? I present, for your consideration, that NBC was fully aware of whom they were contracting with, as well as the content of said program. I find it very hard to believe that once NBC began to request Mr Vischer make changes, that he could not simply walk away. How could anyone enter into a contract that allows one party of the agreement to make changes that strike at the heart and soul of what was contracted for??? I find it difficult to believe that Mr Vischer did not have the option of saying “thanks but no thanks” to NBC and walking away. Was it the lure of the money that caused him to turn away from the Light?
And By the way, Russ – standing up for a belief and protecting our children is not intolerence. You say – wow look at the unchurched kids that will watch. By removing the foundation of the progam, it is just another superhero cartoon.
just so you know this isn’t all a bunch of angry parents writing you, here’s one from a teenager. Your really dissappointing me. I thought veggietales was one of those things that “could put into words all I’ve wanted to say” to my little brother about God, but now your taking out everything I wanted to say! Saturday morning cartoons huh? well, lookie there, it’s another speedy gonzalez, here one minute, gone the next, LEAVING NO LASTING IMPRESSION IN IT’S TRACKS…
one more thing, just so you don’t think I’m a completely judgemental person and a hypocrite ( because yes, I do know that the moment I am too hasty to judge you I become the very hypocrite I so much want to call you.) I want you to know I will pray for you, not that you change your mind and take a stand ( although that would be nice) but that you find a way, a productive way that doesnt just sweep it all under the rug, to deal with this pressure. because belive me, if you think the emails and comments your getting now are bad, then i suggest you go hide in a closet for a week or two, because although I certainly don’t claim to know everything, I at least know one thing, God’s word is not meant to be compromised. And I’m certainly not the first nor will I be the last to tell you this.
I have read each and every blog on this page. I too am of the opinion that Phil sold out to NBC.There are many examples in the Bible that prove that God is able to handle every situation.I am reminded of lions and Daniel who did not back down. All he had to do was compromise and he would not have been thrown in the lions den. We are living in a time where there has been way to much compromise. Our children and grandchildren are not allowed to pray in school. They are being taught eveloution. And we as Christians have to take the blame because when we should have stood up and said no but we did not. This is just another example of Christianity being pushed down and trampled on. My prayer is that God will use this program to reach the lost. But how can we expect him to use a show he clearly is not a part of? NBC has no problem with airing Madonna on a mirrored cross mocking the crusifition of Christ. But they find it way to offensive to tell our children that God loves them? As for me I have already blocked NBC from my station lineup and I have e-mailed them to let them know I for one do not intend to watch any programing they air until they quit trying to take God out of their programming. You can also e-mail them at, NBCiQuestions@nbcuni.com. Maybe we all can come together to help make TV worth letting our children and grandchildren watch.

AMEN T.J.!!! He said everything I first thought when I heard that Veggie tales was compromising their message in order to appear on NBC. I also agreed with the comment that it would be wise for all those “Christians” who are high fiving Mr. Vischer to watch the movie Time Changer…. we need Christians to be real Christians and not compromise the Gospel message no matter how much money they are offered!
And T.J. ….. May I suggest you check out one of our fellowship churches that are located throughout the US and World? The three main names we go by are: The Potter’s House Christian Fellowship Church (NOT affiliated with TD Jakes), The Victory Chapel , and The Door
Christian Fellowship Church. You can also go to http://www.worldcfm.com or http://www.thedoorchurch.com/index.php? and you can call any of the numbers to ask if there is a fellowship church in your city or within an hour drive from where you live. It’s worth the drive! Our churches preach on Jesus, sin, repentance, and a changed life ALL the time! That is what has kept me saved the last 12 years!
And to Phil and all the other Christians that have made comments up to this point….. what the world needs more of are UNCOMPROMISING BORN AGAIN BELIEVERS who aren’t afraid of what others think, (sinners and Christians alike!) , but more worried about what our Savior Jesus Christ thinks of our decisions. What would Jesus do? BE RADICAL and not compromise….afterall, that’s why Jesus was crucified because He was so radical with the Gospel message. Why should Christians be any different now? Surely you guys aren’t surprised NBC is wanting to edit out the Gospel message? You should instead be surprised to see another Christian brother compromising under the pressure of the world, in order to make a extra buck all the while deceiving himself by saying he’s trying to “reach the lost”. You reach the lost by not compromising the truth of God’s Word.
Russ, I’m sorry you misunderstood my message. I was not saying that I was right or Phil was wrong. The B-I-B-L-E is the one that sets the standards for that. The Bible also tells us not to conform to the standards of this world, which I think poor Bob & Larry have been made to do. The problem I forsee when parents watch this programming then go and purchase the DVD, they just might be offended that the original series talks about God and the Bible. “Hey, what’s this stuff about God and the Bible? They didn’t mention it on t.v.!” Sounds like a lawsuit to me.
And if kids and parents are coming to church just to see Bob & Larry – well, shame on them!
First of all, let’s be realistic. Of course we would all prefer the Veggies to air in their original form, but it ain’t happenin’. But guess what! Just because you remove the name of God from the show doesn’t mean you remove God Himself. His hand has been on these productions since the beginning. To me that’s obvious. Do you think everyone is going to just forget about Him because they don’t call Him by name? Christ is reflected in the characters and values of the show. That’s supposed to be our mission as Christians, to shine the light of Jesus through our lives, actions, and yes, our words. When these crazy vegetables display Christlike traits, do you think they’re not sending a message of Christ just because they don’t use His name? It’s ridiculous to say that they’ve sold out and that people should boycott the show. It’s equally absurd to say that God’s Word is being compromised. Phil is not changing the message of salvation to please NBC. Lost children are going to be sitting in front of the television. What should they be watching instead? I think it’s pretty arrogant to say that since the shows don’t air the way WE want them to, they are of no value to lost families. We live in a Godless society and we as Christians have to fight for every “in” we have. Satan sure is. But this compromise with NBC is not his victory, it’s God’s. To paraphrase a famous cumcumber, God is bigger than the Boogey Man, He’s bigger than the Network and the contraints of the FCC. And to the reader who said shame on those families who were coming to church for the Veggies, do you expect the children in church to invite their lost friends to come because the pastor has a fascinating take on premillinial dispensationalism? I’m guessing they want to be there for the cartoons. That’s what kids do.
Great! Finally a cartoon on Saturday’s I don’t mind my children watching. The saw it for the first time on national TV this past Saturday and it was great. Thanks!
We were wonderfully surprised to see Larry Boy on Saturday morning cartoons, here in NW Arkansas! So sorry that compromises had to be made, but let’s look at it this way: other kids out there WILL watch, and want Larry Boy “stuff”…so bible stores here we come! Well, I’ll be praying for it. I realize some items can be purchased in “secular” stores too. Let God work that one out. Good luck!
I was furious when I saw Larry Boy say something like this, “When we are tempted, we need to trun to our friends and family.” There was no mention to God or the Bible AT ALL! I agree with one of the posters above who said, If NBC asked YOU to remove God from something what would YOU do? I think it is a sad sad day for Larryboy…. someone wlse has apparently sold out for money. Would you sell God out for a dollar? Ten thousand dollars? ten million? What if you already had thousands or even millions as I’m sure Phil Vicsher does. Everyone has a price. God has no price.
I’m sorry I was so judgmental Phil. I have loved most of your work on Veggietales and all Big Ideas toys etc… I didn’t mean to be hurtful. Reading what I said, I was pretty harsh. I apologize. I am a huge Veggietales and Larry Boy fan.
Anyone who has followed the Big Idea saga at all would know that Phil probably does not have anywhere near a million dollars! Larryboy and the Bad Apple was not edited. It is that way on the original DVD. I think the point is that we need Christian friends, family and other role models that God gave us to help point us in the right direction to avoid temptation. I know when I showed this episode at church I used it as a springboard for more discussion about temptation, original sin, etc. I believe all programs should not be an end unto themselves, but merely a tool for further teaching.
I was just wanderimng phil if you have any job openings for a computer graphic technician? I am a college student and it has been my life long dream to work at Big Idea productions and I was wondering if you had a internship for students.
Phil:
I’ve just completed reading of your new book
“ME, MYSELF, & BOB.
My heart went out to you so much during this book. Especially on
the donward spiral. Lessons Learned however was what I
really needed. Thanks so much for being so transparent!!
God Bless you. I know God has many more plans for your life.
I believe it will be larger than Veggie Tales with a happier ending.
For the T.J. and the Cookie Lady comments and all others: one thing I haven’t seen talked about (maybe I missed it, it is late at night) is that even without “God made you special….” there is STILL usually GOD’s WORD quoted in each VegieTales, Larry Boy and 3-2-1 Peguins. This last weekend I think it was “Don’t withhold favor if it’s in your power to do it” – I’m paraphrasing, big time (yes it is late – I need to hit the hay). GOD’S WORD has the power to change lives – it is alive. Millions of people are now hearing GOD’s WORD on Saturday morning. That is a blessing. I believe this is just the beginning.
Dear Phil,
Thanks for all the hard work you give us in spreading God’s word. Your family must really understand unconditional, Christ-like love.
The situation with NBC reminds me when I served a mission in Japan about 14 years ago for the church I go to. At the time a relgious cult called the Om Shinri Kyou was attempting to usher in the end of the world. After this cult bombed a number of Tokyo subway lines and buildings with WWII nazi concentration camp gas, the general Japanese non-religious population became absolutely terrified of any proselyting entities, both Christian and non-Christian. Our missionary work came to a halt. We had to start all over with baby steps and building on common beliefs with people instead of going ahead full forward on discussing God.
Forgive me if this has already been thought up or suggested, but if NBC demands that Veggietales restrict itself to baby steps, except obviously for different reasons, maybe not all is lost. Just a thought, If “Sunday morning values” won’t work as a catch phrase with NBC maybe “Strengthening family values” would? Maybe more veggie characters besides the Asparagus family could come into play. Like, does Bob have a wife or are he, Pa Grape, Larry, Archibald, et al just a bunch of bachelors? Maybe Bob could have a cute, little cherry tomato daughter or son. Maybe pitching in together as a family, modesty for women as outlined in Timothy, sustaining of fathers as righteous heads of the household, why lasting marriage is so important, the value of grandparents, things like this could be turned to. With the shrinking number of mothers and the art of homemaking being lost in our nation, maybe there are other focuses Veggietales could replenish us with as you pioneer through day time television that Christianity is healing and not to be feared.
For what ever reason media people are afraid of God, thankgoodness that babysteps are still allowed and thank you for being humble enough to take them!!!
Duck dynasty and Blue Bloods end with prayer and honor God. This has not hurt their popularity. You will have face God for what you are doing and I would be ashamed.
