Drew Dyck is back in town and joins Phil and Skye for a lively discussion about presidential debates (crazy), theology in Christian movies (weak) and beer in church (sinful?). And absolutely ZERO conversation about toplessness! (Amen!)

relevantmagazine.comI know you were kind of dismissive of Joe Biden in this episode, and it’s totally understandable in terms of his very public gaffes. However, between his recent interview on Stephen Colbert’s new late night show, and this article where he talks about being pro-life, he’s a potential candidate that may be interesting even to the more conservative evangelicals in the audience (especially if the alternative is Mr. Trump):

Movies endorsing the “Not happy ending” – The Player, Of Mice and Men, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas, Looper, Primer… etc. Basically every movie I really liked.
Every (great) life ends in death. Why can’t (Christian) movies reflect that too?
If there was a movie about David the closing shot would be him dishing out execution orders on his deathbed of everyone he didn’t get around to killing (Shimei) or was politically too difficult to do so (Joab).
I guess nobody goes to the movies for real life but a bit of realism would be refreshing. I can’t really watch superhero movies anymore because it is indistinguishable from a cartoon.
Listener since episode 2 or 3. Love love love your podcast!
Drew – Not sure where you are in Portland, or how close to Door of Hope, but I found them through the Bible Project animated videos on youtube, which are awesome, well done short Bible overviews(different not better than anything from Jellytelly!! 😉 Phil maybe you know about those vids??? They are inspiring(again like YOU have been)and coming from another animator who appreciates what you guys are talking about in this podcast. That being, the rare premium quality art mixed with great content. Back to Drew..hearing your hearts over the years, I’d think Door of Hope would be a great fit.

Hey guys,
Just going to start off by saying you guys have the best podcast on the internet. You are always so insightful and you actually think about what you are saying, rather than just say what people want to hear to get viewers. Anyway, as I listened to this one, I heard Skye ask Phil about the “obligation” people have to buy Christian films and how it compares to someone supporting a church. Skye asked if someone was unhappy with their church could they just not give because its the same as not going to a movie because you don’t want to see it. I just had one thing I wanted to point out. I don’t think they are the same thing, because for one, as Phil said, the Bible commands believers to support their church, not the American Evangelical film industry, and if someone was unhappy with their church, they probably wouldn’t be going to that church, just like people who don’t want to see a movie will not go see the movie.
Anyway, just though I would throw that out there. I am always impressed with both Phil and Skye’s insight, as well as Christian (when she is there) and your guests. Keep it up
Hey Phil, Skye and Christian! I came across this blog post from the Dilbert comic strip creator, Scott Adams, that describes his hypothesis as to why Trump is ahead in the polls, http://blog.dilbert.com/post/129713033741/the-reason-for-trumps-success. I want to know your take on it, he also talked about it on the latest Tim Ferris Podcast which is where I heard it first.
Love your podcast, you guys rock!

So I heard Skye this past week in Orlando at the Missio Nexus Mission Leaders Conference. I was very impressed. (He didn’t come off like Archie Bunker at all). I even bought the recording of his talk. I became aware of this podcast through that so I had to listen. I first met Phil in 1976 when his mom was helping me with orchestration in Muscatine. I think he was like 10. Yes, I am old! Just want you to know I loved the interaction and thoughts on the podcast. It will become part of my weekly listening habits. I need to make a correction though from your comment.about Beer City USA. Google it and you may be surprised to see who was voted for that title two years running. It is not Portland. One more comment. I agree movies should lead us to discuss redemptive truths. “Unbroken” was like that for me. It referred to faith but didn’t slap you with it. At the same time if we are going to spend time debriefing movies like “Invictus” with our kids, can’t we do the same with movies like “War Room.” War Room did have some cheese to it and I felt it was really geared towards a Christian audience. The reviewer who said the husband was abusive made it sound like physical abuse which was not the case. All I know is my seven year old grandson went home after seeing it. He made a space in his basement, wrote a prayer list and is spending time praying in his War Room. His grandpa who travels the world made the list and I am grateful to know that even a movie that has some cheese to it can be used to encourage a seven year old to pray much like a cucumber and tomato helped my children learn Biblical values even through songs about “cheese”burgers.
How about the movie “Of God’s and Men”
Movies: If Christian movie makers want me to watch their creations, they should make movies I want to see. Agreed Phil!!
Elections: As much as I want Dr Carson, I think Skye’s prediction is correct. Biden v Fiorina will be the result. Fiorina will take it in a landslide.
Phil was joking about making a movie about killing off our elders and I got to wondering if he has heard of the James Dobson/Kurt Bruner trilogy (Fatherless, Godless and Childless)?
This is an essential episode! I really enjoyed that crazy lively discussion about presidential debates , theology in Christian movies and beer.
