So we're off and running with the "make your own JellyTelly IDs" effort, and the results are promising. We're going to put a site together for posting and voting on this sort of thing (it's fun, so we think we'll make a habit of it). In the meantime, I wanted to show a few so you could see what sort of things we're receiving.
This first one is from a friend of mine who is a designer and an animator. And it shows. It's pretty darn sharp…
[flashvideo filename=wp-content/uploads/jt_paddleball.flv /]
Okay, so maybe you aren't a great designer or Flash animator… what can you do?
Take a look at this one…
[flashvideo filename=wp-content/uploads/jelly-telly-premier.flv /]
Ha! Legos! That's funny! We've got 20-30 more in already, so we'll try to get a site up to show them all. Then we can start voting shorts off the island, so to speak.
Who knew starting a kids network could be so much fun?
In related news, my old friend Paul Conrad is rejoining Jellyfish Labs to head up the design effort for JellyTelly and everything else we do here. Paul is an ex-Disney designer who ran Big Idea's in-house design studio for 4-5 years, and worked with us a bit at Jellyfish Labs before heading off to Pixar to work on Pete Doctor's new film, Up. I'm excited to be working with Paul again. You'll get to meet him soon…
See ya next week for more fun!
Those are awesome! Thanks for sharing.
And that’s very cool about Paul coming on board!
Man, those look really cool. I gotta get busy!
If anybody knows how to get it from a sony handy cam mini dvd into the softwear and then to Phil, let me know. The other camera we used is broken, so we only have the sony left.
Nice! Can’t wait to see more!
hey those ain’t bad ^^
Phillip Roger Vischer! As I am currently reading through your book for the fifth time, something keeps jumping out at me, something that this blog post has just reminded me of. I simply cannot allow the travesty to continue any longer.
THERE IS NO SUCH WORD AS “LEGOS”!!!
Lego bricks, yes. Lego people, yes. Even Lego as a standalone plural, yes. But Legos is wrong, and it irks me every time someone says it – such a fantastic product should be given the correct terminology!
As an example to millions of young kids out there, you should truly be ashamed of yourself.
(The IDs look cool, by the way)
Hey Nick,
Could you remind us what the correct plural form of pedant is? 🙂
Also, if you’re going to be “that guy”, you should at least make sure you get it right. Pretty much the only people who try to make this a “rule” are the IP lawyers at Lego (no I’m not going to capitalize – sue me you crazy Danes). Allow me to quote from the Lego Web Site: “Please be sure to spell the brand name “LEGO” in capital letters and use it as an adjective and not a noun. “. Guess what, using it as “a standalone plural” is still making it a noun. You lose. Thanks for playing though.
I just can’t read overly pedantic comments without correcting them (happily ignoring the infinite loop I could make for myself).
Sorry for bleching up your comments section with nonsense Phil. Please keep up the good work and posting of cute vid clips.
You guys are so talented! The Lego thing is pretty cool ~ what patience you must have to build something like that!! While I have no idea how to animate or design anything in graphics, I have an idea if someone wants to tackle it. I envision something “oceany”, since Jellyfish are sea creatures and all. I think something like a kid fishing (boat or dock…whatever) and pulling up the Jelly Telly logo would be sort of cute. Maybe some bubbles, and water effects? Whatcha think?
Sam, that was raw beauty. Better than Kung Fu Panda. Maybe, like … Pedant Fu.
Okay Nick… and Sam… before this turns into something we’ll all regret, allow me to quote from wikipedia:
“The word LEGO® is a brand name and is very special to all of us in the LEGO Group Companies. We would sincerely like your help in keeping it special. Please always refer to our bricks as ‘LEGO Bricks or Toys’ and not ‘LEGOS.’ By doing so, you will be helping to protect and preserve a brand of which we are very proud and that stands for quality the world over. Thank you! Susan Williams, Consumer Services.”
So…. we could all quibble about how to say “the word” and end up arguing over something quite trivial. YES, the proper usage is LEGO, as in an adjective to modify a noun (such as bricks, minifigs, trains, train tracks, Mindstorms, etc.).
So, Nick, you are correct.
HOWEVER, the very same wiki article also states that “The Lego Group’s name has become so synonymous with its flagship toy that many refer to the bricks themselves (collectively) as “Lego” or “Legos” (the latter term being common only in US English)…” (please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lego under “Trademark” for both above references).
As far as I know, unless someone moved my townhouse in the middle of the night… I live in the U.S. So I say “Legos.” And both of my sons say “Legos.” And when referring to the bricks that they play with, create with, imagine with, and build dreams with, they say “Legos.” And when asking them what they want for Christmas, they say (rather loudly) “LEGOS.”
And yes, Sam, if you’re going to use “Lego” as a standalone plural, then grammatically it becomes a noun. So, you too, are correct.
If we’re going to crucify someone who lives in the U.S. for using the commonly-used U.S. rendition of the word “LEGO” then we’d better get out the broomsticks and start beating on the people that use the word “Coke” for “Coca-Cola”… or “fridge” for “refrigerator”… or even “Scotch” for “Scottish”…
Rock on, Mr. V.! This is all awesome! And we’re looking forward to that website so we can all vote. And welcome back, Paul! Glad to see you back on board!
Cookie Lady,
Wikipedia? I like Wikipedia, but beware. Just a cautionary note. Wikipedia is fun and easy. Wikipedia drowns our search engines. Wikipedia is interesting. One thing Wikipedia is NOT is authoritative. Wikipedia’s co-founder, Jimbo Wales, is an atheist. There about a bazillion examples of liberal bias, deceit, silly gossip, and blatant errors on Wikipedia, that they refuse to change even after contacted by the company, person or group Wikipedia is slandering.
i`m gonna make another one, phil!
Sorry, there was an error. Please enable JavaScript and Cookies in your browser and try again
Whoops.
That’s right Phil! You are on notice! The R & K Crew is, are, and will be back to make another Lego movie! So, watch out! And to all those Lego enthusiasts out there, guess what? The main body of the logo was made of Duplos! That’s right! You fell right into my trap, endlessly debating about Lego blocks, when they were actually Duplos! (Muahahaha!!)
i think my dad is a little crazy.
Nicely done, R & K! I didn’t take the time to look carefully at the blocks, I was enjoying the animation too much. I’ve always enjoyed animated Legos (There! I said it again! So Sue Me!), and I’ve always wanted to learn how to do that. My sons have come up with some great scenarios, but we’ve never taken the time to learn how to record them.
Though…. I would beware, R & K… the use of the term “Duplos” might get you into deep water around here! (SHHHhhhh… don’t tell anybody, but the correct term is DUPLO. That’s right, you correctly heard me whisper that. It’s D-U-P-L-O… all CAPS, and in the singular only. Got that? Sure? Okay…)
As for the Wikipedia thing, I understand that a lot of the stuff on that website is probably not valid. However, unbeknownst to all you listening out there in radio land, I did my research! According to the official LEGO website (and yes, guys, it is always used in all CAPS, so take note, please):
From http://cache.lego.com/downloads/aboutus/LEGO_company_profile_UK.pdf:
**********************************************************
Please help us to protect our brand name:
• The LEGO brand name should always be written in capital letters
• LEGO must never be used as a generic term or in the plural or as a
possessive pronoun, e.g. “LEGO’s â€.
• When the LEGO brand name is used as part of a noun, it must never
appear on its own. It should always be accompanied by a noun. For
example, LEGO set, LEGO products, LEGO group, LEGO play materials,
LEGO bricks, LEGO universe, etc.
• The first time the LEGO brand name appears it must be accompanied
by the Registered symbol (which is printed on their website, but I couldn’t get it to copy here).
Thank you for helping us!
*************************************************************
This company profile was dated “2007” but you know, even those LEGO people make mistakes. For the footer of the document says “Campany Profile 2007” instead of “Company Profile 2007.” And if I looked harder, I might find even more mistakes. So people are human. And the human error (if you want to call it that) of the American people is to call these building blocks… er, bricks… “Legos.” And I, my dear fellow Americans, will be the first to admit that I am in error.
Oh, a thousand pardons, fair Lego Campany! Oh, no, wait, I forgot to put it in all CAPS….
Oh, a thousand pardons, fair LEGO Campany! For I have certainly been a horrible example to all the fine young students of creativity. Yea verily, I am nothing more than even a louse. I beg of you, take me to the center of LEGO city, where I’m sure the LEGO stocks built by the prestigious LEGO minifig police await. (or would they be built by the LEGO soldiers? Hmmm… good question. I should contact LEGO Corporate offices, and ask them about that, don’t you think?) Allow me to suffer my just and fair punishment at the hands of those LEGO diminutives, for they certainly are a more honorable sort than I.
And I believe that is enough profuse apologizing for one day…. now I think I shall go play with my younger son and his…. um… legos…
Wow, I can’t believe the LEGO thing is so important, and I thought my family was pedantic!
Phil, I can’t wait to a) see the other animations and
b) read Me Myself and Bob- I haven’t got it yet, but I read a chapter that I found online and it was pretty good. Even thought the person’s blog I found it on probably illegally typed it out.
Jonathan
Haha, I didn’t expect my LEGO comment to get so much attention. Whatever the case, the animation still looks cool.
Ok going back more towards the top of these comments, I like Lisa S.’s envision of the Duplos. That’s actually a really cute idea so if ya’ll could come up with that, that would be neat.
Arrr!! The R & K Crew has struck again. Me thinks I’ll start typing in pirate to encourage the wrath of the grammatically correct too. Arrr!! (‘Tis all in good fun!)
HaHa…. Kevin, you’re just too much. Arrrrgh, yourself! 🙂
And I actually meant my comments to be in good fun as well, but my humor is sarcastic and rather dry, so most of the time unless you really know me, my attempts at humor don’t sound… all that… humorous…
Fare thee well, my good pirate. Methinks, although, that posting in “pirate” won’t necessarily upset the grammarians; that is, unless the text into a Yoda style of speaking infuse you can. Hmmm?
OooOh fun. I love the first one.
JUST finished mine and sent it off to Phil. Sigh of relief. I’m pretty pleased with it. Hoping to stay on the island, as it were.
🙂
Those are great! The one with the colorful building blocks is my favorite because we too are fans of colorful building blocks at our house. I hope to see more of those! Thanks, Phil, for sharing them. We continue to pray that your ministry will thrive and reach those who need to hear the message of the gospel.
I get you. I think you are funny, Cookie Lady.
Oh, cookie… 🙂 My kids are still small, so instead of the “L” word, we still say “MegaBloks!”
http://www.megabloks.com/en/products/description.php?product_id=925&cat=1&brand_id=12&age=0
Can’t wait until Mardel / Family Christian carry the “JELLY BRICKS®”!! 😀
On the other video: How come all Flash Shorts have similar sound effects? Is it a “MAC thing?” It’s always so crisp and clean, like a Fossil Watch case or a Viacom Conference Room Poster…
I’m still lost: is Christian Music to evangelize non-believers, or is it just entertainment for Christians? Ditto for JELLY TELLY.
–(sygcheo/confounded)
Funny thing…if you have little ones and they leave their legos or Duplos or whatevers out on the carpet…and you step on one with bare feet….they are all the same thing: “STUPID TOY!” That’s just from personal experience. 🙂
That’s odd Lisa – that’s what my Mum used to call them too! Legos may just be American, but “STUPID TOY!” is obviously universal.
So excited to hear of your new adventure….Blessings
Phil, God has given me a vision for a reachout similar to your ministries
thru VT and now Jellyfish. I have it in my head but know nothing of how to
market it. I am sure you get a lot of people with these ideas, but I seriously
believe this vision will be bigger to the children and represent biblical principals
stronger than Disney Babies has in the Disney world. I tried to get in touch with you a few years back thru the Big Idea wed site, but was not successful. Today I heard you on a talk program in Dallas on KVTT where you gave your testimony of what happened with Big Ideas and I was touched at your humble spirit and sharing of how God used the situation you experienced to teach you a very valuable lesson. Please respond….. “His” Servant A teacher in Texas, Jan
