It’s a potluck podcast! Christians predict the world will end… last Saturday? Plus, the story of two committed Christians in the NFL, both philanthropically active, both known for taking a knee on the field. Yet one is a hero and the other a villain. We’re talking about Tim Tebow and Colin Kaepernick, and it’s a fascinating study of what the American Church values today. Oh yeah… and the Swiss’s toilets are full of money. No really. Money. This week on the podcast!

I love football, but I have been frustrated by the protesting. My frustrations come from one of the statements you made in the podcast about Trump making statements and coming across as a Bully on the playground. You are spot on! But in school, we are told to ignore the bullies and they go away. Why can’t we ignore him? I know he’s our President, but by responding to his ridiculous statements we continue to affirm him and he is getting reactions. There has to be a balance between disagreeing with his ridiculousness and bullying and ignoring him and stopping giving him this type of power over our Nation’s emotions.
Quick question:
I should preface this by saying I am in lockstep with you about NFL players protesting and race in America, and all that. I read the Michael Frost piece this summer and found it very thought provoking.
But here is my question, that I think many evangelicals will echo: do people really object to Kaep because of his hair and his tattoos, or do they resonate more with Tebow because his life, as far as we can tell, is truly earmarked as “redeemed”? He is committed to living a holy life as is outlined in the scriptures.
I’m not saying Kaepernick isn’t, but again, the public markers of his life aren’t as clear: he is on record as having dated a Muslim (“do not be unequally yoked”) and the issues he has aligned himself with *could be* called purely political or secular. Again, there is plenty of room for debate as to our responsibilities as Christians to the systems of the world. But Tebow is famous for specific Christian topics and personal behavior as are outlined in scripture.
Does all that makes sense? What are your thoughts?
Showing respect when the national anthem is played is an important symbol of unity for America. No matter what divides us, and there are many things that divide us, we are one nation under God. There are many ways to protest, but not showing respect during the national anthem divides the country further at a most basic level. We all have reasons to protest something. It could be abortion, environmental, etc. However, I rely on the freedom I have in America to protest. By protesting during the national anthem, I am protesting the very symbol that protects my freedom to protest. My protest of a very specific issue would mar a very general show of respect for my country. It may be legal, but it is divisive and in my opinion, is not right.
I’ve enjoyed the podcast for quite some time, but have to call it quits. I just can’t take the “everything relates to how evil/stupid/whatever Trump is”. I appreciate that everyone has different opinions and such, but it’s now overshadowing the messages you are trying to present on your shows. Is this how Skye is all the time, or just his podcast persona?
It seems logical to take the words Skye frequently says as a reflection of what he believes. And also to do the same with Trump.
